The transforation is magnificent. Partly forced through the Taylor report but much needed. In all honestly, the board could have done it on the cheap by putting seats onto the old Kop and Tilton. They didn't do that, we've had many a board that would have at the time. THey had a vision for the future and are sticking to it.

Let's not forget the old brick walls for the blokes to go behind to pee. Sonetimes, I didn't know where to look for the best!! lol

The post about crap turnstiles got me thinking about a game at St Andrews in August 1986 v Derby.

As I drove into what is now the Kop car park in my Mk1 Sierra I noticed the orange clay car park was now covered in 2 ft high weeds and clusters of grass. I parked by the wall about 5 yards from the turnstile and walked up to the rusting blue barrier. A small queue had formed as one of the turnstiles was not in use, because a friend's, (Pete's) MK4 Cortina, (which was burnt out) was wedged up against it. The car had been stolen from outside the Bulls Head in Hall Green 2 weeks before and had been in its current position for over a week.

As I waited a group of Derby fans (15 to 20) appeared in the car park looking for trouble. Some of the Blues fans ran at them from the queue and the small posy of potential hard men from Derby tried to run through one of the 2 – 3 foot kicked in gaps in the rotten wooden fencing. The gap was resized to 5 foot instantly but to be honest it neither, improved or depreciated the overall look of the place.

As we entered the ground the sun shone off the broken glass cemented to the top of the walls as a deterrent to those who would not pay the entrance price. I walked up the stairs at the back of the old Kop onto the terrace. The pitch was surrounded by fences and barbed wire however the grass looked great.

The football that was served up was absolutely crap and the game ended 1-1.  I generally look back with rose coloured specs at the past but thinking of this day has made me realise what a dump St Andrews had become, what a crap team we had and what a fantastic job the Owners and Karen Brady have done to deliver us from the third world in every aspect of football to the 21st century. With the plans they have for the new ground I for one as a mad Blue Nose will be eternally grateful for there efforts.

Get up off your knees mate. Ok there's a fancy looking car park at the front, so what! They won't let me park there, so what good is it to me?

at least people could afford to go to St. Andrews then.

I have never been bothered about the state of the food, toilets etc.

I eat and drink before I arrive at the ground, and I go to the toilet after the game.

I am now forced to sit in a cramped seat and have to keep getting up to let in late comers, early leavers and those who can't go a couple of hours without going off to buy food and drink and half a dozen trips to the toilets. You can say what you like about the state of the old ground, but for me it was a lot less hassle and far more enjoyable than the current St. Andrews. Also if there were people round you that you didn't like, you could move, now you can buy a season ticket and find a load of foul mothed morons sitting behind you/in front of you etc. and you're stuck with them for the season.

I am not on my knees mate I just am giving credit where its due. According to the majority of replies on here your sort of sour (I can’t afford it) attitude is in the minority.

You say people can’t afford to come to the current St Andrews! At our last league game the attendance was 27998 and that is about 20000 more than attended the average league game in the 80s. So you are wrong. It is expensive but they can afford it, if only just.

You are not forced to sit in cramped seats if you don’t enjoy it vote with your feet and stay away. In the old ST Andrews when you were able to move freely around the ground away from morons did you notice the pi55 that was floating down the terraces, the ground that was only 25% full, the railings / barbed wire around the pitch, the crap manager in the dug out, the poor team on the pitch and my mates burned out Cortina rammed up against the turnstiles?

Your problem is clear from your comment about the Kop car park. You say you are not allowed to park there, yes you are. The only problem is you cant afford it or don’t want to pay for it. You see mate your type would like it cheap and cheerful, if you can call a ground falling down, drowned in pi55 with 7000 people in it watching lower league football, cheerful. Remember the numbers I stated? They indicate its better value for money today.

So never mind me on my knees mate how about you get off your belly and out of the gutter and try and set your sites and standards a little higher.

I know your type too mate, "I can afford it and to hell with everyone else" So, when you get up off your knees, get your nose out of the air, as you sound a right old snob. as it happens I can afford it, otherwise I wouldn't go. But there are a lot of fans who can't, and a lot of those are the ones who used to go in the so called 'bad old days' And I am forced to sit in a cramped seat, because as you say the alternative is not to go. The fact that attendances were lower years ago is because of the hooligan problem, nothing to do with the state of the toilets etc. I'm not saying it was perfect in the old ground, but what I am saying is that todays stadiums are just as bad in a different way, except that we have to pay an arm and a leg for it. How people can say modern stadiums are wonderful, when as i say you have to sit in cramped seats, and keep getting up and down every 5 minutes to let people in and out, whats so great about that. Given a choice as i've already said i would prefer the old ground, and yes I know your original post was supposed to have everyone agreeing with you, well life aint like that and you should accept a few different opinions.

re proccy I think your partly right but Bradford was due to a mass of litter not cleared,Hillsborough and Heysel were without doubt policing caused or not prevented by good policing should I say.
But I go to watch Cheltenham Town and I think a lot of it is attitude change, fans are more tolerant of others at the moment. It is a treat to go to and fro the match with other fans, and the banter, and a treat to be able to stand at the match.
On a Saturday young kids 10yrs old go to the match with their friend(s),without their dad/mom etc and are perfectly safe. Not pushed out in the drinks queue either.A real friendly, family club.Talking to away fans ie from Mansfield ,theirs is the same yet 400 plus make the journey for lower standard football? Football as we knew it is still there and I think fans are starting to rebel re prices. The Robins gates haven't changed from year to year.If you get a foul language shout everyone around remonstrates. It isn't repeated. We have to get a cheap standing area back even if just for families. The Main Stand would be ideal for this.
Blues v Baggies 24,000! If that doesn't ring alarm bells nothing will.If I want to take my kids I have to wait for cheap tickets.Move to another part where I may be stuck by some Yobbo(s) and have to object .This should not be neccessary.I remember Derby had a super family stand for 2 kids and more and you could collect after the match.

Some great stories there and I will have lots of sentimental memories and stories about the old Kop and Tilton.....Hooliganism was rife throughout the 70's and 80's and unfortunately (or should that be fortunately ) Blues had a well known band of trouble makers ......I say fortunately with tounge in cheek of course because at least as a HOME fan I always felt SAFE at St Andrews and many away fans stayed away for safety reasons (usually their own personal safety) rather than football reasons

I can honestly say the only time I felt unsafe was the one and only time I ever heard housebricks raining down on the old corrugated roof of the Kop terracing and away fans (believed to be Chelsea and Millwall whose team(s) were NOT even playing us that day) were trying hard to get in to the Kop hellbent on trouble....that INFAMOUS game was v Leeds in May 1985 and journalists descibed it as the most violent ever involving rival supporters.............a young Leeds supporter lost his life that day and I hope we can all respect his memory by making St Andrews a welcoming place and clearly with the necessity for all seaters, some progress and the planning by our board the home of BCFC has improved vastly over the last 10 years....although it is a shame we won't see 50,000 plus crowds there again

I don't know if the rumour is true but I heard that Blackpool won the right to a Super Casino to be built by the Sands group so does that mean our 'New' stadium plans are going to be shelved or is there still hope????

Keep right on

i accept what you're saying, and agree to a large extent. i was involved in that level of footy for many years and all you say is true - my comments were of course directed towards bigger grounds/crowds where dangers lurk unnoticed. i got to walk around one with a fire officer, and listening to him you'd never go to another match in your life! how we ever get out alive is a minor miracle.....kro

Re Partisan.
On that fatefull day the lad was killed by Leeds fans trying to get away out of the ground from the Blues fans and the wall collapsed under the pressure.I have never seen so many Blues fans from all corners trying to get at away fans.Thousands, they couldn't be stopped. I stayed away for 4yrs then.

Had the Bradford disaster not happened that day and took all the attention,St Andrews would have been closed down for a very long time time and Blues demoted. That was a certainty.

What was going on at St Andrews on that day was like a scene from a medieval battleground.

Leaving the ground at about 6 o’clock, after all the delays, I thought we are for it, however all the talk was about the disaster at Bradford.

re safety at the Blues,I recall one match when before the game a group of 5or6 teenagers came up to me and my pal, they were crying and shaking and asked if they could stay and stand with us on the end of the kop as they were so frightened. No one was after them. That's how it was.Terrible.Of all the grounds in the country,I can't think which I haven't been to,if I were an away fan I would not have gone to St Andrews and I've worn my colours every ground. Sad episode!
