Mario Melchiot believes Birmingham can emulate the achievements of Bolton by being a surprise Premiership force this season despite a turbulent start to the campaign.

Melchiot accepts Blues now face greater expectation from supporters who will no longer be happy with just surviving in the top flight.

Steve Bruce's side made a rocky start to the season but victory over West Brom at The Hawthorns eased the anxiety levels ahead of Saturday's home clash with high-flying Charlton.

Now Melchiot wants City to make St Andrews a fortress after successive defeats at home to Manchester City and Middlesbrough.

Melchiot said: "The fact we have stabilised ourselves as a Premiership club means now the fans' expectations are a bit higher than they were before. People at one time were just satisfied with survival but now they want more. They want to see us fighting nearer the top of the table and that is what we must aim to do.

"If you look at teams like Bolton, who were going for a European spot, those are the kind of achievements we should see ourselves capable of matching. We can compete with teams like Bolton and Middlesbrough and we have to push ourselves to get up there with those teams. It is a gradual process but I think it is possible for this team to get into Europe."

i really hope now that the team will pull together quickly and at least try their hardest to make this a reality

I hate it when I read this type of thing.

There are so many 'fans' out there who will take this as a guarrantee of European football come next May. They will go mental when we are not in a European qualification place by the end of September and will call for SB to be sacked at Christmas if we draw with Boltona nd Boro are 2 points ahead of us.

In reality, Europe isn't beyond us and we do have the squad to qualify through the league.

I will be happy as long as the team, manager and everyone else puts in the necessary effort to reach the top 6 or so. If we fall short, at least we did our best and we'll fight on next season.
