ALAN Curbishley couldn't help but chuckle when he heard that Steve Bruce had apparently 'lost the plot' in the wake of Blues back-to-back defeats at home, to Man City and Middlesbrough.

The Blues manager took offence at some such criticism, pointing out that what he had done during the previous three-andahalf seasons obviously counted for nothing.

Curbishley has suffered such flak at Charlton Athletic over a much longer period of time, often when his team have embarked on an all too familiar fade-out to a Premiership season.

But Curbishley continues to reinvent his Charlton side. He has learnt to remain calm and philosophical about what comes a manager's way.

Analysing Blues rise over the years, he says: "I like the way they've gone about things. "The Gold brothers and David Sullivan, if they wanted to, could throw everything at it and go the Abramovich way.

"What's happened though is that in the last five, six, seven years the club has been slowly built.
"When they took over the place was quite dilapidated and run down. "There was no instant hit, they even got relegated [into the old Third Division] under Barry Fry before coming back up again. "Under Trevor Francis they missed out in the play-offs three years in a row, Steve came in and managed to do it and get them up.

"In the last three years, it's been a totally different situation to how it was before.

"But when a club has made such a steady improvement, they can afford a knock, a bit of a bad time because of what's been achieved there. And the people at the top are sensible, which helps.

"Everyone in the Premier League gets unhappy. If Chelsea win the league, Manchester United and Arsenal fan are not satisfied.

"We're all in the same boat and that win at West Brom has put Birmingham back on track I'm sure."

Curbishley adds: "The expectation levels every year get higher for us. If you look at us, we're probably fifth from bottom in the Premier League in terms of gates and around the same area in wages.

"It's difficult for us, but if you stand still in the Premier League then you end up sort of going backwards."

A man who talks some sense.

A bit of a turnaround though - it is usually Brucie who is complimenting the opposing managers style and achievments.

I remember when we played Charlton at The Valley in April 2003; we beat them 2-0 (remember that wonderful back-heeled goal by Dugarry ;) ) - after the match we went to a local pub which was mainly full of Charlton fans. I overheard some of them having a right moan about Curbishley, saying that he had to go. I couldn't believe it; how could they moan about Curbishley after all he had done for them - just because they had lost a match!!

That attitude has become very familiar. :(
