Ellis 'working on' takeover bid

Villa confirm takeover interest
Aston Villa chairman Doug Ellis has revealed he hopes to firm up a proposed takeover bid within the next month.
Ellis, who owns a 33% stake in the club, confirmed that an offer from a mystery group had been received at the club's annual general meeting.

"We have had an approach, and it is interesting, there is no doubt about that," Ellis said. "But it isn't finalised. We are still working on it.

"I hope to be able to let people know more within the next month."

A Russian consortium had been linked with Villa although the club initially denied this.

Ellis has already rejected a £47m bid from a group which included former Manchester City player Ray Ranson in July.

Villa reject Ranson takeover bid

The 81-year-old valued the club at £60m although he insisted that money would not be the motivating factor in deciding whether to sell the club.

"What I will say is my criteria is that we only want people who are seriously interested in the future of Aston Villa," said Ellis, who insisted he would not stand aside from negotiations.

"Of course, the price is important but it is not as important as having the right people to take this club forward."

Ellis gave no hints about his own long-term future at the club, where he has held sway since 1982.

He again came in for criticism at the AGM and failed to win re-election by a show of hands but exercised his proxy vote.

What gets me is why would anyone in their right mind want to take over a club going steadily backwards? Lets face facts, each season we climb further up the league while they are slowly dropping. We are having a new stadium built, with a casino. Most of our support is actually within the city of Birmingham, unlike their 'fairweather' supporters from the outskirts.

If they do get bought out by some investor, they may well do a Chelsea and we will get left behind. One thing going for us is the support and the forward thinking board. Surely this is a good opportunity for us to stake a claim to this investor? After all, apparantly Abramovich was close to buying Spurs before he got interested in Chelsea and until he took over, Spurs were a bigger club than Chelsea.

Not sure I agree with you there, spurs were never a bigger club than chelsea. The reason they are interested in Villa is because they are going backwards and can be picked up on the cheap!

Also, Lord Ellis is duty bound by the Stock Exchange, not to discuss various financial activities made by Villa.

This happened at their last AGM as well, he was "gagged" because of a "takeover" possibilty then.

the original lies about take over talks were to stir up interest. This new take over appears to be for around £45m, which is less that doug had boasted about last yr, stating £75m was the minimum. the new lower figure will not provide extra cash as would be a share purchase buy out.

it does not appear to be russians, but a combination of villa fans who have money, but not enough to fund new players. As previously mentioned blues could get together, at this lower figure, pay £45m, then sell villa park for say £15m, (land for redevelopment) players for £25m and sell bits of villa park to silly fans for £5m. and then have got rid of villa for good

Vile are always 'nearly' bought out just around the time of their AGM.

The sad part of this is their fans have now fell for it 3 years running.
