British Olympic Football Team; Welsh & Sottish FA's say NO

The British IOC have tried to get a GB football team together, the English & N.I. FA's have agreed, but the other two have laughed it off.

FIFA will allow a one-off team, which as with all football olympics, is an Under 23 age group. It will not interfere with the independance of future teams.

So the GB team will happen, but without youngsters from Wales and Scottland being eligiable to enter.

In my opinion it is daft, it would be on merit, with independant selectors, and could be good. Even if there were no english players in the team i would still support, and I am sure the scottish fans would aswell if no scottish players etc.

I heard it was just Scotland that had decided not to send any players? Which I think is just bloody minded and shows how backward and inward looking they are!

They wouldn`t get any players in the squad anyway, they know this hence the reason they`ve said no to save embarrassment further down the line. ;)

we don't know that yet, for a younster to play in that team, 2012 the child could be anywhere between 10 and 15 now, even scotland may get a couple of outstanding players, and their refusal to enter will effect that child.

this is exactly the reason they have said no.

in reality it would be called the british team but it would be full of english players.

probably get the odd scot sitting on the bench or cleaning boots but that would be about it.

To Be honest i think this is something that will change as the welsh and the scots supporters and sports fans will demand a greater involvement from there FA's i know i would and if it was England pulling the same trick i'd be writting letters demanding we do get involved on a weekly basis until we did get involved

I agree with the jocks as I don't like the idea of a Brtish team.

A better solution imo would be have an home internationals tournament (for under 23s) the previous summer. Winning team plays in the Olympics.

The trouble is its not up to us, the only way we can have a team in the olympics is to have a great britian team as we compete as great britian. My solution would be to all compete as our own countries but then out medal tally would be tiny (or even more tiny ;) )

I didn't mean that we would actually compete in the Olympics as "England" (although I wish that we could). I meant that the GB team would be drawn entirely from whichever nation won the home internationals tournament (i.e. England).

I actually think the Olympics are becoming a bit of a joke, and that they have lost their original aims. I may be in a minority here, but I believe they should just be for individual competition, not team sports. We have enough football, basketball (etc.) tournaments as it is.

Leave the Olympics as a medium for showing individual excellence, rather than have them, as another vehicle for overpaid team events.

I know what you mean, but I'm not sure that it's a question of team vs individual sports. Relays, for instance, are part of Olympic tradition. Likewise, rowing, etc.

I think a better test would be to limit the Olympics to only those sports for which the Olympics represents the pinnacle. i.e. if the top competition in a sport is NOT the Olympics, then it shouldn't be in the games.

So,

In

Athletics
Swimming
Amateur boxing
Gymnastics
Rowing
etc
+ many small sports

Out

Football (because the World Cup is bigger than the Olympics)
Tennis (Wimbledon, etc)
Golf
etc

Agree totally with Mr Penguin on this one. Personally, I also think that a country should host the games, not a particular city. This would allow a country as a whole to benefit from new facilities rather than a single place. The Olympics in London means nothing to me as I'm never going to use any of these new facilities 'for the good of us all'.
