Daily Telegraph: Steve Bruce bought a new dog …. : a German Shepherd called Spike from the local police kennels. "I've been out for hours on end," he says. "Over the fields, walking him for miles. " Spike's arrival, it seems, hasn't hurt at all in giving Birmingham's genial manager some welcome breathing space. Setting out from his farmhouse in the Warwickshire countryside, Bruce gets a bit of time on his own to clear his head, to compose his thoughts and think about the challenge, the toughest he has faced in four years at St Andrew's. “I built a team who were going to be horrible to play against and difficult to beat. But that can only get you so far. Eighteenth months ago we tried to find a way of improving and moving up, say to seventh or eighth.'' …….every other club with ambition strengthened as well, while Forssell, such a bright light on loan from Chelsea before sustaining a serious knee injury, has struggled to regain his sharpness and confidence. When injuries kicked in this season to several key players, City found themselves swimming against a strong tide. Bruce sees only one way to keep their heads above water: "We've got to get back to where we were and what we were about, because we're obviously in a fight now." Past experience certainly tells him not to give up. "In our first year it got to January and we were thinking 'Hang on a minute, we can't see ourselves surviving', then, all of a sudden, we sign Christophe Dugarry and it gives everyone a lift. The year after, we signed Forssell and Dunn and that did the same. Last year it was Walter Pandiani and Jermaine Pennant. We always seem to pull a rabbit out the hat. Let's hope we can do it again." For that to happen in January, he knows the side will have to acquire a few more points on the board. "I think we've got to be realistic. If we're in the mid-table pack by January, I would expect the owners to have a little dabble, like they've always done. But if we're marooned at the bottom by Christmas, then I think it would be wise to be sensible."…. …."Ultimately you try to stay positive. You can't afford to take on water. You try not watch Sky Sports News 24/7, you try not to listen to radio phone-ins all the time. You try to cut yourself off and focus on what you're doing." Good news for Spike. More long walks to come. www.telegraph.co.uk/smith |
