........ but not for 10 years yet Steve Bruce has admitted Birmingham's current desperate Premiership plight is affecting his home life and he is considering walking away from football at the age of 55. Bruce, whose side entertain West Ham on Monday evening, revealed his family had become "kicking blocks" after he had been unable to leave behind at work the pressure of Blues being in the bottom two. The City manager, who will be 45 later this month, revealed he had "a date in mind" when he would quit football and that was likely to occur after another 10 years. Bruce said: "With football management you have to look at the health issue and also the stresses that the job puts on you. "I am aware of it and your family also suffers because you are suffering. You take it home with you and that's not healthy either. "They are your kicking blocks and they shouldn't be. They should be the most important people for you and you end up not giving them the respect they deserve because of your frustrations in the job basically. "You are a bit edgy or ratty or, the slightest little thing, you look to pounce on. You are basically not yourself and it's them who suffer. "The biggest thing for me is your home and you are not quite yourself and I know that I haven't been for the last six to eight weeks. "You are not quite the same as what you should be. You take the frustrations home and they suffer for it which is wrong." Bruce added: "I've got some idea in my mind for when I'll call it a day with football. Absolutely. The date is way beyond the three-and-a-half years I've got left on my current contract. "Maybe 10 years from now I'll call it a day. I'm nearly 45 and if I do another 10 years, maybe that will be it. The problem is when you get there, you will think 'hang on a minute'. We will see." Bruce had to make a tough decision in replacing goalkeeper Maik Taylor with Nico Vaesen and he also has broken up the Matthew Upson-Kenny Cunningham central defensive partnership because of the form of Martin Taylor. He said: "I am paid to make decisions. That's my job and sometimes they are difficult decisions. You have to make them on what you think is right at the time. "You hope in management that you make more good than bad decisions because that is ultimately how you are judged. You are judged on your signings, what is a good and a bad one. "That's what management is about, making decisions every day of your life, big decisions, and you live and die by them. That's my job. You can't socialise with the players. Maybe once or twice on a day out but that's it." Bruce admitted he is still searching for the right blend as players slowly but surely start to return from lengthy injury lay-offs. He said: "We are still to find it because of injuries to David Dunn, Muzzy Izzet, Mikael Forssell and Stan Lazaridis. We haven't played the team I had in my mind in terms of a strongest team because of people being out." Birmingham will be seeking their first home win of the season after collecting just one point - a 2-2 draw with Liverpool - from six games at St Andrews. Bruce admitted: "Our home form is horrific and if we had only average form we would be where we want to be in the pack of teams above the bottom part of the table. It is something we must address." Striker Emile Heskey is battling to overcome the knee injury sustained in City's penalty shoot-out victory over Millwall in the Carling Cup in midweek. But Izzet, Damien Johnson, Cunningham and Neil Kilkenny - all rested for that game - will be back in contention against Alan Pardew's side. |

I agree with you tuggy minus the "if"! I am confident we will fight our way out of danger, now that we have competition for places again. We do need to buy a 4th striker with pace if no one in the reserves is cutting the mustard. |

Well, I'm pretty well disgusted with Bruce for this. He's had a few months of poor results and performances and thinks about packing it in? No wonder our team doesn't seem to have any heart and fight this season. If we, the supporters had that attitude, they'd be playing in front of 4,000 fans. Shameful, and, for me, the signs are there for all to see. We need someone who will inspire the players, the fans and give everyone the belief that we can move forward. Retirement my @rse, get a grip Bruce. |

I read this in the paper yesterday and i was a little shocked by it to be honest. The majority of people take their work stresses out on their family and loved ones. Bruce is no different other than the fact he gets paid more than the majority of us. Loads of managers say that they are going to retire from the game in their late 50's but they never stick to it - Fergie and Bobby Robson being just two examples. I would take this comment with a pinch of salt and we will probably find that Bruce has been misquoted anyway. |

I believe the bloke. I really do. Personally I see some of the criticism on here - rightly some of it too - and I wonder just what words like that do to a man when he's trying his balls off. Yes, people from every job in the world take home work stress but it's very rare that your job affects the LIVES of so many others. For so many of us, Blues are part and parcel of our every day rituals. The club is like a member of the family. Bruce isn't stupid, he knows that. He knows that each decision he makes sparks debate and feeling throughout the pubs and homes of this wonderful city and beyond. I don't know about you lot but if that was on my mind when I went home, I'd probably inadvertantly take it out on my family too. He so badly wants to get it right. |
