i see brucie has been praising the opposing team again,
just for once it would be nice to praise our team and tell them how good we can be if we all play to our strenghts, try and intimidate the other team instead of praising them,,years ago shankly and later brian clough had a way of making their players feel 10 feet tall and made them believe they were better than any other team, even though it was not always true,we need to get nasty on and off the field,we are in dire straits right now and need any trick we can use to get us out of trouble.

how did i know someone would ask that,
nothing wrong with being nice but sometimes you have to be nasty to get success.

Is that really the reason for his success?

His arrogance?

Or is it tactics and having a squad of quality players to chose from?

i'm pretty sure he spends all week saying to our lads how good they are - there's nothing wrong appreciating/respecting opponents before battering them!! ;)

is being nasty and winding up the opposition really the answer though??

i just think we should say nothing about the opposition and worry about our selves!

fc uk the rest, lets get our team fighting, and playing the game like it should be played!

as fans we can do the intimidating and nastiness! I for one wont be welcoming west ham with open arms after the last time they came here! a few drinks and a mooch in town is what is needed! We shouldn’t let them get comfortable for one minute! Have them worried, quiet, subdued… this will hopefully reflect in their teams performance

we can get behind the team and get a result tomorrow!

Come on the blue boys

I'm sure that praising the opposition will be a big boost to them.

Surely there is no harm in commenting favourably on the opposition, most managers do it before matches, but what they also do is boost their own team up by telling them that they are even better. The fact that this is mainly done on the training pitch and in the changing room means that we don't get to hear much of this psychological boosting.

However, say what you like about Bruce, he is often stating in the press that he has a good bunch of players. Unfortunately he gets criticised by some people for saying this because some people want him to publicly slag off his players when they don't perform.

And we dont get to see much of it's effect either! There have been times this season when it looks like the team pep talk must've been given by Tony Hancock. :(

I think I prefer the psychology of Mourinho, Wenger and Fergusson. Praise the opposion only after you have beaten them.

bluediver ,sanity at last ,
you have hit the nail on the head,
a few weeks ago brucie was saying lots of players let him down and how rubbish they were, then in the next breath telling us how brillaint the opposing team players were,we have to start intimidating teams when we play them ,make them think they are inferior to us,lately we seem scared of teams, when we get a result yes by all means tell everyone how good the opposing team is,im afraid nice guys dont win too much in any field ,you must have a ruthless streak.

Precisely.

We really are clutching at straws if we think Bruce's comments could help the opposition.

However, I do believe that the opposite is true. If SB had come out with 'West Ham are a load of rubbish' the article would have been put up in the opposition changing room to stir them into action, and this would be much worse. Remember certain comments from the Witton lot, and comments about 'them' by Pandiani?

No, SB's approach is far better. I have no problem at all with a manager making positive comments about the opposition, because he is only telling the truth. We just have to show we are better than them, without having to spout off to the press about it.

Let's show them on the pitch, not in the papers.

so if someone ask mourinho, wenger and fergie a question he doesnt answer it?

I think they all use the phrase, 'I'm here to talk about my team, not the opposition'. I think I much prefer that type of response.

Whether praising the opposition gives them an additional spur is debatable, of course. But this seasons poor results hardly seem to indicate that it harms them!

My view is that it is another area where Bruce is getting it wrong. If others believe it has no effect, so be it.
