I have always been a supporter of Bruce but Monday night tested me a bit!. Potentially we are not a bad side, but the team are woefully lacking in confidence. At the moment what we have is eleven players not a team. The easy bit is to blame individual players. Anyone can do that. What the team needs is something to lift the pressure. What I would like to see is for Brucie to get everyone playing in their normal position as far as injuries and the squad will allow. Graft rather than fancy dan will do for me at the moment. Set a playing system that includes throw-ins and set plays. I would like a system that only requires Heskey to head the ball from wide positions and preferably from balls dispatched from as close to the corner flag as possible. Players should be running off the ball. The manager/coach should be defining and demanding those runs. Every player should be instructed as to precisely what is required whether we are in possession or defending. This would make it easier for the senior players and lift some responsibility off the younger players whose indecision probably stems from fear. I also have to say that the apprehension of the supporters is being reflected by the players. We have to become better supporters. Let us get behind them on Saturday. KRO |

I've played in teams when the confidence is low, yet your manager and coaches are screaming for movement and there isn't none. It doesn't mean the coaching staff aren't emphasising it enough, it simply is the result of the players not having the belief. You start doing stupid things like playing the ball and then not providing support or the option of a return pass. You've lost belief in yourself and your team mates, and its almost as if you're playing the ball to someone else thinking, "here i've done my bit, you do something". Your coaches are still telling you the right thing to do, but your state of mind means YOU don't do it. The coaches can't do it for you though. Thats why new players (lol ringing up old mates from other teams etc) help, they haven't been stuck in the low confidence. Thats why Kilkenny has been so refreshing, and playing with no fear. |

Agree with mark, our set play is poor. Corners dont produce anything at the moment. Bloody hell watching yobs at the moment about yobs who have gone to belarus to see under prevalage children who have "No Hope". Not saying anything about yobs. Thats not the point i want to make. Seeing those children in belarus orphanage puts things like football into perspective. Just reflecting on how i feel about football. So what if we end up in the championship..does it really matter that much, after all its not life threatnening is it? |

Some good points have been made here and I agree with alot of them, however in terms of players losing confidence and not having self belief etc that is also up to the manager. Look a Jose Mourinio (Mind the spelling) he was so full of himself, so confident in his own ability it rubs of on the players, when a player beleives that the system he is playing works he has the confidence to play in it and you win. If a player does not beleive in the system (Not that I could see any sort of system on Monday) then it will have a negative effect. Ive had lots of respect for Bruce since he took over but I think he may be a little to inexperienced to deal with a crisis like this. I think he needs to buy a top class striker with pace and experience to get us out of trouble, if we cant afford such a player the were f*@ked. :( |

Great post Bluefan.... Couldn't agree more.... I've been shouting this for over eighteen months now ever since it was going wrong with Bowen as the Coach.... The keeper should be playing the ball out not kicking it; in this way we retain 100% possession rather than giving the opposition a 50% chance of getting it back.... At throw-ins the "thrower" should have a choice; even on Monday night the only person demanding the ball was Dunny; but as ATL (who always gives great insight from his experience of the playing side) says the returning players like Dunny and Izzet are not stuck in low confidence and actually are like new players.... They believe that they can make a difference and because they believe they will and they do.... At corners we should be taking both "outswingers" and "inswingers" so that the opposition cannot have a set plan to defend.... It used to be just Rowett; then it was just Savage; then it was just Stan; now it's just Pennant.... Kilkenny delivers a lethal free kick and corner which bends with pace.... We could alternate between Stan, Pennant and Kilkenny now.... Blues are totally predictable and boring and we need to offer options and threats! And finally, our players need to raise their game by raising their fitness and thereby closing down the opposition fast every time they get the ball at their feet.... Be on them like a rash and don't give them time to think.... It works for Wigan and they don't have anywhere near the individual quality of the players that we do.... But as ATL says we need to play with BELIEF and as Bluefan says we need to play as a TEAM..... |
