Wouldn't disagree at all. And yes, I would have given Butt MOM. His best game for us since coming here, I thought. Makes you wonder why he hasn't been doing that all season.

My assessment of the team performance would be that it was a poor first half performance, and a reasonable second half performance. Nothing more. There was a little more effort being shown, and that was pleasing. As was Butts performance and Marcis Painter's assured game.

To move forward we needed a game like that....
Too many issues to address:
Morale, Confidence, Familiarity with new Team Formation, Belief, Desire, Handling the negatives from fans etc....
It needed a Peter Crouch type goal really but we did better than that....
I thought Butt had an average first half but then suddenly at one stage in the second half he switched gear for the last thirty minutes and that is what made the difference....
I believe that they all needed to reach a "stage" at some point in the match where they began to believe again.....
This is just one small step on the road to recovery but I am so glad that we have achieved it!

I would disagree with a couple of those ratings. Clemence was quite close to being my Man of the Match and definitely deserves higher than a 6. And although the rating of 5 for Tebily is probably accurate, the description of 'shaky' is putting it a little mildly! :o

I know Butt scored an all that but today I just thought that Damian Johnson and Stephen Clemence where the men of the match, I thought they both played brilliant and really put in an effort, Taking nothing away from Butt there though.

6 for Clemance ???

He put steel into the midfield from the start, never gave the ball away once & ran his b*llox off for 90 minutes.

Can't wait for a "7".

I totally agree....
Clemence was our Man of the Match....
And can't wait until he is match fit and up to Premiership speed....
The guy is a total example to anyone who wants to play for our Club....
Never complains - Just gets on with the job; and gets on with it superbly!

I'd mark Upson down a point, credit Clemence and Painter with an extra point and agree Butt deserves man of the match. That's the sort of performance we expect from a guy of that experience ( .. and wage bracket ... ). He gave his all today for Blues, thank you Mr Butt.

Why young Painter hasn't started more games at left back I'll never know, we looked so much more ballanced on the left hand side. (or is it just that we finally had 2 players on the left after dropping the useless wet tissue that is Julian Gray). Seriously, felt much more comfortable with Painter at the back.

Tebs, what can you say ... Mr Inconsistent ... one minute he's taking the fight to the opposition, the next he goes walk about into midfield leaving the right side totally exposed. Good man in the trenches, if he can concentrate for long enough.

Well done boys, todays was not a stage for prima donnas - ala Julian Gray - and finallly the majority stood up and were counted ....

I wonder who Tebily's agent is
Cause sometimes he doesn't seem to be in the right career

Perhaps he could move into office work, or roof thatching.

TBH he does not look comfortable on a football, and what is the name of the sport he plays for us??

My ratings would of been:

Vaesen- 6- Not much to do but was accomplished, dominant, tried to play from the back too. Kicking was a little poor though.

Tebily-4- The guy tries, and is defeintly part of the squad, ie, he fights for the cause, but he is just not a right back. He is often on planet la la land, and although he gives everything, he is a liability to the back 4. If he had a bit more concentration and wasn't day dreaming all day, he'd be ok.

Cunningham-7- Assured and reliable, albeit it with not much to do.

Upson-7- Was showing shades of former self

Painter-7- Really positive debut, kept John, Radzinski etc quiet and looked to get forward.

DJ-7- Excellent, 100% per usual and has a tempo about him

Clemence-7- Battling display, not a great passer, dribbler etc but shields back 4 and gives it simple

Butt- 8- Ditto Clemence, but he supports Heseky too, better footballer and was yesterday showing his former United days

Stan-6- Bit quiet, but kept at it, looked decent on the ball and gave Painter a reliale base infornt of the youngster making his debut

Dunn- 7- Superb again. Always wnats the ball and looks to make things happen. I pray he stays fit

Heskey-8- Lead the line brilliantly per usual, battling and always is a threat

Clapham-7- Comfortable and positive

Pennant-7- Lively, made an impact

Jarosik-7- Same as other 3 subs, made an impact, why can't he show that spirit and ability constantly?

It's upto Brucie now to install some confidence and belief into the players. We need 2 halfs against Man City that were like the 2nd half yesterday. Hopefully the Forss will get himself fit and give us an hour up at City. Bruce said yesterday on 1152 he expects to have him back for next weeks game. Let's build on this now.

The News of the World ratings (from what i can remember) have Clem 9, Dunn 8, Heskey 8, Painter 7, DJ 6, Kenny C 8, Butt 8

Clem had a great game and Butt played well also. How we needed that goal.
