The problem we have is our current leauge position though.

If we were riding high in the table and liverpool came in with 7-8 million i might be tempted because we could use the money to attract other top players, but in our current situation no-one decent will want to come.

So we need to keep our best players on our books in order to give ourselves the best chance of staying up.

When eventually Melchiot comes back to full fitness we will then see the best of Pennant again like we did last season, hopefully in time to help us climb the table.

Liverpool will be looking at the biggest names possible first, the likes of Joaquin.

The only thing that would make a little bit of sense, is a lot of those class players will be cup tied.

So which Newspaper was it anyway

To be honest Jermaine Pennant is a 'stigma'
He had off the field problems previously whichever club he has been at and in fairness to Steve Bruce, the Blues manager wrapped an arm around the guy when the player needed it the most but judging by an incident in Zante in the summer and turning up with a hangover at training a few weeks back I think the guy is a 'powder keg of trouble' waiting to go off
He has so much talent but seems to need a good kick up the backside to really bring it out
Like many of our more high rated players,he has been notably inconsistent

Amazingly Liverpool were linked to Matt Upson a few months ago and now this

Tell you what though, if we got 5.5 million plus offer for Upson and a 4.5 million pound plus offer for Pennant I would say take it and certainly try and persuade Steve Finnan or Stephen Warnock (or preferably BOTH) to move the opposite way

If we can't get a player exchange deal going then the money could be used wisely to set up some decent replacements at probably half the price....the legendary managers such as Clough,Shankly and Revie and more recently O Neill,Curbs and Allardyce were shrewd in transfer dealings....whether our man Bruce can do the same it remains to be seen

If he couldn't rebuild the nucleus of a good side with 10 million pounds at his disposal (or even more than that if the board cough up) then he's in the wrong job

You don't have to have a 'Roman Abramohvic' backing you up to sign quality players....Essien was 25 million and no more than a midfield 'bull' whose specialty is nasty tackles.....and Drogba (24 million) couldn't hit a cows rear end with a king sized banjo....then there's Crouch ...7 million ??? .....Southampton must have been laughing all the way to the bank

At the end of the day ...every player has his worth...some are over rated, some are bargains (Owen is 10 times the striker Drogba is and cost just over half)

5.5 mill for Upson and 4.5 mill for Pennant sounds good business to me

Its the silly season approaching and the papers are just probing to see what gives....By the time January comes someone will have been right about something!Upson is kidding himself into thinking he can plauy for england, his distribution is woeful and why on earth would Pool want pennant? He plays our type of game, never theirs.Dont encourage the press

Liverpool have been in the market for a right sided winger since the summer and have so far failed. Newcastle are meant to be the favourites for Joaquin and liverpool have already had bids turned down for Stelios of Bolton.

It is inevitable that they will take a look at Pennant but i think that is all it will be.

Sorry Barryblue
"no"
I hope to christ the players never look on this board. With comments like this why should they show any commitment to us!? All we do is slag of the players we have!

Instead of say "feck off"! to em we should be trying to hold on to em!

come on pete, nobody plays poorly on purpose do they? as long as they're trying their hardest and are committed to the club we need them. we're not exactly over-endowed with quality right now are we? ;)

proccy,
agreed m8 ,but not be above a bit of a rollicking, lots of players form has dipped this while back, but what gets me more than anything ,is the lack of effort and could not care less attitude shown by some players,we have had players at this club over the years with little or no skill but they made up for it with pride and passion ,at least look like you care.

I "believe" that pennant and melchiot will be with us all season.

Obviously the debate as to whether they will stay for more years depends on if we stay up, and who wants them,.... will be tough to hold on to Pennant, melchiot, and upson if we really struggle, they all want european football, I would be more worried about Butt and Dunn, they were key on saturday, and would not want to lose them.

I think Jermaine needs time to mature into a man in order to stop acting like a kid, hes the sort of player that thinks he is untouchable due to the fact that hes been at Arsenal since he was in school, on loads of doe, life has just been so f**king great for him, he needs everything taking from him, his football, his money, his lifestyle and I bet then he would understand the value of what he has at Blues. The thing is...Thats not going to happen.

I wouldnt be to bothered if he did leave for Arsenal, It would probably have a positive effect on the training field if we had players around who were as commited as each other...

Pennant is Quality when he plays, thats clear to see. The best outcome would be him sorting it out, showing some commitment and desire but I cant see it happening.

Selling Pennant would be madness.

He is a player of genuine quality who has underperformed this season.

If we lose him we have to buy somebody of the same or better quality. i.e. somebody who we can afford & who wants to come to St Andrews. Whoooooooo ?

Better to work out why JP is underperforming & fix it. Otherwise the chances are his replacement will go the same way.
