Steve Bruce celebrates four years in charge of Birmingham on Monday warning that any players without the stomach for a relegation battle can leave the midlands club.

Bruce went back to basics for Saturday's Premiership clash with Fulham and an ultra committed performance was rewarded with a 1-0 success - City's first at St Andrews this season.

He was delighted with the response of the side he selected which showed five changes from the line-up beaten at home by West Ham in the previous clash.

But Blues are still four points adrift of safety and Bruce has made it clear that anyone without the relish for the battles ahead can seek fresh pastures if they so desire.

Bruce said: "I've been here four years today and the last 12 weeks had been agony up until Saturday. Ultimately I have to share and take the blame for that.

"We can all forgive errors. What we can't stomach is if people are not up for the fight or not up for the occasion.

"If we haven't got that now, we may as well all jack it in because we need people to stand up and be counted.

"I always think a team mirrors their manager and anyone who knows me, knows what type of person I am.

"I'm up and at them, rough around the edges. I'm never going to be a tactical genius and I've never professed to be so.

"But I want my team well prepared, fit enough and organised and, above all, willing to have a go. If they have a go, then fine. Unfortunately we'd lost a bit of that over the last 12 weeks or so before Saturday.

"We had to go back to that and make sure we are ready and have got the stomach for a fight. If people don't like it - then they can go. As simple as that.

"I'm going to be associated with players who I know will not jump out of tackles and will not duck the issue."

Bruce left out winger Jermaine Pennant and Julian Gray against the Cottagers, the latter having come in for particularly strong criticism from fans and pundits after his display against West Ham.

Bruce said: "I'm not going to criticise the ones that didn't play on Saturday because they are a different sort of player.

"But Jiri Jarosik put in more tackles and did more defensively in half an hour when he came on than I've ever seen him in the games I've played him. It needs to be drilled home that is the way we've got to play."

Well said Bruce.

We need players who have the heart for this relegation fight. No bottlers allowed!

agree, and the saturday team did well, I feel his remarks are aimed to motivate the team into a new direction, and hopefully they will all get the hint.

If we play like that at man city, spurs, and the two games against manu're I am sure we will get something from the games.

I agree with Bruces comments on Jarosik as well - he showed there can be a defensive side to his game when needed. he is more likely to get into the team if he continues to show this side of his game.

yeah me too, i hope they can at the very minimum show that passion and desire now - as we've said before on here, you have to fight for the right to play in the prem. at least we'd go down with a fight ;)

Lets be fair to Gray, he has talent, has scored for us twice IIRC this season, can go past players but AFAICT can't tackle to save his life.

Thats his main problem, I don't think that he doesn't care as some suggest I just think that he is crap at tackling. I am not sure if it is because of lack of confidence, fear of injury or just a lack of aggression needed to get in there but apart from taht he is generally not too bad.

I reckon that if he could be pushed into more tackles he would be a very useful player and rising star. Maybe someone needs to throw him in a rugby training session a bit like school days where he is forced to dive head first at someones legs with the ever present possibility of a face full of studs. Alternatively send to some martial arts classes with the ever present danger of getting a smack in the face or worse. If that didn't improve his bottle nothing would unfortunately knowing our luck he would just get seriously injured. :(

The man is a professional footballer so he must have some tackling ability or he wouldn't be where he is, he just has to be encouraged to use it.

I used to be a lone voice on Bruce's tactical ineptitude. Then one or two started agreeing. Then the one or two became several. Then several hundred. Blimey, I have even heard you starting to ask a few questions recently, Proccy. And now? Well now even Steve Bruce himself agrees.

And I aint even got a coaching badge..... :D

Amen, Man City's hard workers are 6th while Leeds were fighting relegation with big name lightweights like we have now.

Hopefully we'll sell Gray, send back Jarosik, sell Clapham.

Well why not go the whole hog since you want to get rid of the player who has scored two of our dismal goal tally and one of the few who actually shoots outside of the box and has also added to that goal tally. Why not also send back Butt, sell Pandiani and Forsell. get rid of DJ, Clemence, Tebily, Both Taylors, Mario and Upson and then you will have cleared out pretty much everyone that people like to use as a scapegoat but wait we still have the board they would have to go as well

Grey has a number of good qualities, its just his tackling thats suspect, whilst he may not be the best person to always start with he is a useful first team squad member and Jarosik is exactly the sort of midfielder we need with an eye for goal, the ability to pass and make things happen. Posts that call for players to be sold just becaue they aren't the flavour of the week that ignore what they give us really wind me up

And I aint even got a coaching badge..... :D

I have, several.

I just finished a training session, an all day event at a club not far from me, in 35 degree heat  , every single one of these kids put in 100% effort.

Thats all you can ask for, if their technical ability isn't as you would like, but they try, as a coach, you are happy.

The same can be said for any standard of Football.

Also had some Queensland Roar players come down, good to chat with them about their hope for the new A League here in Australia, according to them, they are using it as a shopping window to European clubs.....theres gold in them their hills.......

To me this is him saying that melchiot and jarosik will be leaving in January, two people who have come out and publicly said they don't want to be involved in a relegation battle.

Encouraging words from Bruce though, we all knew we needed to come out with a battling performance like that and we did.
