Birmingham's Mario Melchiot has conceded that his thigh injury may keep him on the sidelines for over a month.

The 29-year-old defender limped off after only eight minutes of the 2-1 defeat against West Ham last week.

He said on his personal website: "I am so gutted about it. I do not know exactly how long I will be out but it normally takes four to six weeks.

"I can't remember picking up so many small injuries in one season. It's very difficult to remain cheerful."

However he added: "I have to keep my spirits up and stay positive about things."

The former Chelsea and Ajax full-back missed six games earlier in the season with a knee injury and is frustrated not to have played a more telling role in the Blues' battle to avoid relegation.

Steve Bruce's side managed to gain their first home win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Fulham on Saturday but are still four points from safety.

Melchiot said: "It's just typical that I get the injury at a time when the team probably need me more than ever.

"I knew straight away I had pulled it and there was no way I could continue.

"When I saw the manager's face I could see how unhappy he was with it. It's like he is getting one kick in the teeth after another."

Another kick in the teeth - takes us to the middle of January with this one

I was listening to Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank at the weekend on the radio and he was saying that no black players are getting into the Dutch team at the moment, there are real rumblings amongst them, Mario was quoted as being one who was being ignored. There was also Jimmy himself ,Edgar Davids and Clarence Seedorf.

All the ones you've mentioned have all seen better days. That may be the reason they're not picked and not, as Jimmy-Floyd intimates, because of the colour of their skin. The Dutch are one of the most racially tolerant nations in the world.

they nearly walked out of the euro's before they started , they said the same thing, so its nothing to do with having better players for their positions, Hasselbaink and melchiot have always been fringe players, davids is a bit too militant , and seedorf is just that little bit too old , but a good player

i do find it bizarre that fans can rejoice at one of our best players being injured ....out of form? yeah,... want away? he says not.....quality player? absolutley ;)

There's no doubting his ability. Technically, he's one of the best at the club. I don't agree with the levels of vilification that some people on here seem to go to with regards to certain players. And as for rejoicing over a players' injury...

However, in Melchiot's case, it does seem that his heart is not in the club. True, he may be out of form, but I don't believe we've seen 100% committment in his performances this season. His pre and early season comments about considering his future at Blues and wanting contract talks (after just a handful of games) have only added to unsettling feelings around the club.

If his heart truly isn't in the club then by all means let him go. However, i hope he proves the doubters wrong.

I wouldnt say it is good news that Mario is injured but at least we have options at right back. DJ has performed well when he has played there.

I agree that Kilkenny needs to come back into the midfield - if he is fit - as we have missed his desire and influence.

Not at the expense of Dunn, Butt or DJ though, imo.

I would rather have DJ at right back than Tebily though.

Butt was great in the Fulham game and he has earnt his place in the team for the next game. I would move DJ to right back and Kilkenny to play in the midfield.

"I can't remember picking up so many small injuries in one season. It's very difficult to remain cheerful."

I personally think that the above is the most important part of that interview. Why do our player seem to pick up so many injuries?

As for commitment IMO Mario is a consumate professional he will play and contribute fully whilst his contract is running after which if he doesn't like it he moves on as he always has. I have no problem with this. People delude themselves if they think that the majority of professional footballers have any sort of long term commitment or loyalty to a particular club. Its a job like any other and they probably have the same level of commitment to their current employers as we do to ours. Like us if a better offer comes along or we see opportunities elsewhere we are likely to move jobs and not stick with our employer out of some form of misguided loyalty.
