Jordan blasts 'fake' Blues bid for Johnson

David Hills
Sunday January 8, 2006

Crystal Palace chairman and Observer columnist Simon Jordan has launched a furious attack on David Sullivan after Birmingham's co-owner claimed to have had a £6.5million bid for Palace striker Andy Johnson rejected.
The Press Association reported yesterday that Birmingham's offer of £3m plus two unnamed players had been rejected. Their story valued the deal at £6.5m, and Sullivan said he had been told by Palace that they would not consider selling Johnson, a former Birmingham player, until the summer.

"We have been told that Andrew Johnson is not for sale. Their [Palace's] view is that they are going for promotion and wouldn't look at selling him until the summer at least, assuming they didn't make it," Sullivan said.
Jordan hit back, denying there had been any contact between the clubs, or any bid. "Birmingham have not spoken to anyone senior at Palace, haven't made a bid, haven't made an inquiry," said Jordan. "They haven't been told we'll sell him in the summer - they haven't been told anything. Sullivan has misled the press, his fans and ours, all - I'm guessing - in a sad attempt to make Birmingham look ambitious."

When Jordan's views were put to Birmingham, their spokesman Andy Maxey said the inquiry had been made last month. "These comments by David Sullivan relate to an inquiry we made about Andrew Johnson four weeks ago," he said. "At that time Simon Jordan made it clear that Johnson wasn't for sale so we won't be making a bid."

Jordan was further infuriated by this explanation, saying, "Absolute rubbish. They've never made an inquiry: it's nonsense." The Press Association said they stood by yesterday's story.

Jordan's feelings about Birmingham relate in part to a deal done in 2002. "They offered £5m for Clinton Morrison, which we rejected," he said. "Their interest in the player then appeared in the press, the player became unsettled and we ended up having no choice but to sell for a massively reduced fee of £3.5m. It felt like a mugging. It made taking Johnson from them really sweet compensation."

"Johnson is not for sale to anyone," added Jordan, who, writing in today's Observer Sport, has also criticised West Ham manager Alan Pardew for making public his interest in the striker. "Pardew using the press as a way round the game's laws must be made officially taboo," he said.

The press do tend to go overboard, they catch the slightest sniff of a possible transfer and they elaborate on that. To be honest, the board must be stupid to even try and get Johnson. Let's face it, he isn't coming back.

Yeah proccy but who did he get from us? Johnson and Morrison, both for a song.

Who have we got from palace? Steve Bruce, Julian Gray and Morrisson (for £3.5 million).

So who got the better deal do you reckon?

I hate this guy with a passion, and did you notice that none of the bile he comes out with about us was said when they were signing Morrison. In fact I am not sure why we sold him to them

So, we can expect a denial of Jordan's claims from David S ?

When do you think we'll get it?

i'd say its about even!! i know sully's a bit of a lad, but i'd trust what he says a million times more than that nob jordan - the bit about o'mozza is funny, we offered £5m but they wouldnt sell, o'mozza became restless to move so jordan had to let him go 4 months later for £3.5m!! expensive few months they were eh?
cabbage jordan, he's like savage in a suit with a little bit of brain - mental ;)

Don't get me wrong, I can't stand Jordan. I really can't. I hate the way he talked about 'I' all the time instead of 'We' or 'Palace'. But doesn't what he say have a ring of truth about it? Just look at our board's track record.

How many times have you had a letter drop through your door with things like "Special Offer!" planted across it only to find that it's a reduced ticket if you bring a mate for a Premiership game? Or the debacle a few years ago over the "Four Premiership signings by next week!" only for it to be Eddie Newton. There's lots of instances of this too.

The way we go about negotiating for players. We won't pay a penny more. It ended up with us losing out on Brucey's "Number one transfer target" THIS SEASON because of stuff like this.

I'd love to read Jordan's comments and have a good chuckle and be able to refute them straight away - but I can't. I just can't.

Jordan saying £3.5mil + Aj for Morrison.

Our board saying £4.5 + AJ for Morrison.

Jordan saying no bid for AJ made.

Maxey from Blues saying they enquired but did not bid.

The press fabricating this story? No denial from Blues about bid!

Its got more twists and turns than an episode of Dallas.

Who is JR tho?

While I am sceptical of Jordan, this is very similar to the Scott Parker bid that never was. There are still fans who believe that we had a bid of £6m rejected for Parker - no bid was ever made. It was all spin.

I am not saying this is the same with the AJ 'bid', but it is typical of Blues modus operandi.

Ask yourself this: What is the advantage of publicising a rejected bid? It tells agents you have £6m to spend on a coca cola striker. Is that good? Only weeks ago we were saying we had no money.

Work it out for yourselves. I have.

Very good point.

On the one hand it leads fans to believe that the board have been active in trying to find a high profile striker. Yet at the same time the price for any striker we now go for will increase due to this fact.

Hmm.
