Here's a quote from a Blues fan about five years ago. Can't rememeber who the signing was that we had just made, but it don't matter:

Me: 'What do you think of joe blogss'

John: (of the Tilton) I don't know him at all, but he can't be any good, he signed for us'

Now a few years ago, when I started watching the Blues (1953), the crowd had some character, the adults around me had confidence and bottlle, the Midlands was a thriving industrial centre, we were in some ways the envy of the world, now we are defensive, negative and lacking bottle. The spirit that created Birmingham. and the Midlands as the heart of the UK's prosperity has been lost. We just sit and whinge about anything and everything, and our favourite passtime becomes a focus for the negativity because it is seems our only hope of fame.
Bout time we got a life again, IMHO. Northerners, Southerners have maintained their character in the main. We need to find our way again. the football will follow.

It is certainly not the only cause of midland football's decline, but it is a big part of it.

Was that the era of our famous FA Cup final victories then ? Or when we won the league ?

Thought not.

Apart from a brief spell in the mid-50's, we've been an under-achieving yo-yo team. So the crowd with bottle, character, etc, etc, achieved what exactly ???

They never won **** all. So excuse those of us with a little more ambition.

Your argument :

1. In years gone by, Blues fans had character, blah, blah, blah, but now we moan.

2. Our moaning - or lack of character or whatever you want to call it - is somehow to blame for our team's lack of success.

My argument :

1. We never won **** all anyway in years gone by.

2. So even if the team in those days were supported by fans with character, it clearly made s*d all difference.

By the way : "If you disagree that's fine, just what I would expect".

Based on what ?

he's not helping by speaking cryptically, but i think you're missing Pat's point here - if we're talking West Midlands football then Villa and Wolves have both had a fair few glory days

As an area we must accept collective responsbility and we need to act

Local Govenment - Recognition of the Business potential and the pride that supporting your club when they are doing well does for Morale

Supporters - Keep believing and as Pat said we need to look at football with a positive oulook- support your club- keep the rivalries up (minus the silly stuff)

Clubs - Recognise the need to look forward as aposed to sideways and behind all the time. Why not build a team to win a trophy may it be league, FA or european. It can be done.

Media - Promote this area for what it's worth and not only because it has a bloomin big shopping centre and cheaper parking than the south east!

As an area we have suffered more than most over the past 30 years with real depressions in the work place and a realignment of what it means to be from the West Mids. One thing we do lack as a region is an identity as in some respects we are still in the bowels of a depression trying to redefine what we are. We are no longer the car capital or the manufacturing mecca - so what we need to as an area and as cities is decide if we want to be known as the city with the odd building or the city with the FA cup holders on one side -the league cup holders on the other and down the road the Midlands representative in the Champions league.

Why shouldn't we be known for our football teams? we do have some of the most famous and a couple of the oldest teams in the land within the region. Our football clubs have big money owners who are known nationaly instead of just down Needless Alley.
