ENDANGERED AND HUNTED EVERY year thousands of whales and dolphins are slaughtered for food and use in fertiliser. Since 1984 commercial whaling has been banned by the international community, but the Norwegians, Japanese and Icelanders continue the killing in the guise of scientific research. The Japanese whaling fleet in the Southern Ocean, near Antarctica, will kill up to 935 minke whales and 10 fin whales this season. It has also announced it will start hunting the whale watchers' favourite, the humpback, imminently. Four days before Christmas, the Norwegian government announced it would increase its 2006 quota to 1,052 minkes. And Iceland, which recommenced whaling three years ago, killed 39 minkes last year and is expected to hunt a similar number in 2006. There is no humane way to kill a whale at sea and the mammals are condemned to a horrifying death. The whalers spot their prey, then chase the beasts to exhaustion before firing a grenade-tipped harpoon. The grenade explodes inside the whale, rupturing its internal organs, and in theory killing it instantly. In reality the whale dies in agony, which can last more than half an hour. Dr Harry Lillie, physician on a whaling trip in the Antarctic half a century ago, said: "The gunners themselves admit if whales could scream, the industry would stop for nobody would be able to stand it." Among the most endangered species are the North Pacific right and northern right whales of which have been reduced to only a few hundred by hunting. The southern right whale was almost hunted to extinction. PLEA FOR HELP TO HALT KILLING THE plight of the whale led Greenpeace yesterday to urge Britons to back their fight to save thousands of the endangered creatures. For the past month, campaigners aboard the charity's ship Esperanza have been trying to defend schools of minke and fin whales being hunted by the Japanese whaling fleet off Antarctica. And one of the crew, Yuko Hirono, 28, from Tokyo, said: "People whose hearts were touched by the death of the trapped bottlenose in London should be aware of the scale of the slaughter here. "We need support - so find out how to help us by logging on to www.greenpeace.org.co.uk" Yuko and her colleagues risk their lives putting small inflatables between her countrymen's exploding harpoons and the Southern Ocean whales. She said: "It's vital Greenpeace is in the Antarctic to protest and try to cut the unbelievable numbers that are being hunted pointlessly. "There is hardly any demand for the meat any more - and so saying it is our culture is no longer any excuse." She added that the Japanese fleet has 1,000 whales in its sights right now despite a worldwide ban on commercial hunting being in place since 1986. She insisted: "My government says they now hunt for scientific research. But that's just not true." from www.mirror.co.uk With how people reacted to the plight of the northern bottlenose whale in the thames, instead of just saying what they would like to happen surely people should put the words into action and supports campaigns to stop whaling and get rid of the loopole the law which allows whales to be killed for 'scientific' reasons. before they become extinct and future generations being prevented from seeing these creatures in their natural habitats!! |

this is probably one of the cruellest, saddest acts that our "civilised" species perpetuates. i for one would love our government, amongst others, to start putting this stuff on the agenda as being as important as global warming. the flip side of the coin is, we've hunted cod and haddock to virtually the same levels of near-extinction but you still see the chippy full on friday night and nobody says a word...i think its called hypocrisy. on that note, even at my advanced age, i'm seriously considering becoming a veggie as soon as i am convinced i can get all the vitamins, minerals etc in a safe way.... ;) |

I've been veggie for 20 years. Why is ok to kill a sheep, chicken or pig but not ok to kill a whale, gorilla or tiger ? |

thats exactly the dilemma im facing now - since november i've been trying to cut down dramatically on animals, and i can recommend quorn and linda mccartney stuff as more than adequate replacements taste wise, but i dont much like the idea of shoving handfuls of tablets down for vitamins/minerals/oils etc - what is the solution please penguin? |

Well, I do take vitamin supplements. One multivitamins & one omega oils. Easy. I don't bother with quorn or anything specially made for veggies though. Most of it tastes disgusting. I reckon that it is secretly produced by the meat industry to deter people from going veggie. |

Proccy, that is brilliant news - we'll make a vegan of you yet! Getting back to the thread, this whaling has been a massive problem for some time now. In fact, I remember posting something similar during the summer when I wrote to the Norwegian prime minister - never received a reply from him though. If you are interested you will probably be able to get more details from http://www.captiveanimals.org/news/2005/japan.htm and http://www.pressbox.co.uk/detailed/Interna...hter_37713.html. I did a demo with them outside the Japanese Embassy back in October and loads of people turned up. It seems that our Japanese friends aren't interested in what other people think of their practices. As stated, the export market for whale meat etc is minimal now and the 'scientific' excuses would be laughable if the whole thing wasn't so downright cruel and horrific. Considering the outpouring of grief re the whale in the Thames the other day, then this would probably be a good time to let make as many people aware of this as possible. |

vera, the pictures in some of the papers today showing the absolute bloodbath that occurs when these magnificent creatures are harpooned was harrowing to say the least. it appears they attach grenades that go off inside the whale, and theory has it they will die within 30 mins. ofetn it takes hours of absolute unimaginable pain and suffering to some of the most noble and graceful creatures on the entire planet. thanks for the links, i for one will be signing up - enough is enough for me now   |

Good for you Proccy **thumbup I know that people will often take the mick out of 'animal rights protesters' but I think that is just because they don't get to see the evidence of what is going on unless the national press picks up on it (as they have done today). At least going veggie is a lot easier today than it was 15 years ago - oh I remember the smoky bacon flavoured sausage/burger mix :D If I hear of anything else happening (protests etc) then I will let you know. If you want any more info on anything then feel free to pm. |
