In a very good mood. I passed my driving test yesterday and it has taken 24hours to sink in that i can finaly chose to live away from a railway station!

I'm now on the hunt for a car to build my dream with although i have no idea what i want to drive except that it must be an automatic. Does anyone have any tips or know of any good value motors up for sale?

congrats from me too ;)

however, without p'ing on your parade, you do realise an automatic is the car equivalent of a dirty mac, or anorak, dont you? :D moped drivers graduate to automatic cars, normally nice red rovers with the letters "imanob" on the back to signify how rubbish they are.......................

anyways, enjoy driving, start saving, and dont be stupid on the roads - insurance will kill a young fellas finances before the car does.

oh, and when you do want an adults fully spec'd boy-racer, you can have my fiat coupe for £4k - now dont say i dont do anything for you!!!

Thats Genius Proccy! lol

Insuarance should be cheaper as i'm over 25 and i'm not looking for the Essex road version of a formula one car.

I learnt automatic simply because i wanted a quick pass and the centre i took my test at does have lowest fail rate in the country because of the roads. I will be doing most of my driving in London so i figured a clutch is one of things you could do without and do without replacing too often. I be suprised if i'd get out of second in a manual down my way!

Anyway Cheers Proccy.

EDIT - I meant Pass not Fail!

Fair enough.

Definately get something cheap and second hand while your inexperienced. I passed in april and got a 1.0 and the insurance was 800 for a year which is cheap for a first years insurance

What to buy depends on your budget, but some general advice :

- do your research... draw up a shortlist of 2 or 3 potential cars, use websites & mags to check on reliability/common problems/etc; get to know the specs (e.g. maybe the pre-2001 version 1.4 engine was crap but the post-2001 is good, stuff like that), if you are buying an auto look for reviews of used autos

- buy something with a solid service history

- buy something that will be easy to re-sell (i.e. well-specced cars in standard or metallic colours; be careful of expensive-to-fix specs (e.g. air con) if the car is old)

- use autotrader, etc, to get a good handle on prices

- buy the car you want rather than getting wrapped up in a haggle over a hundred quid here or there

- top tip for buying used - try to contact the last-but-one owner (address on the V5 document)... they have nothing to gain by lying to you so they'll let you know whether they had any problems with it..
