Middlesbrough manager Steve McClaren is confident the strength of character Steve Bruce possesses will see him through his darkest hour at Birmingham.

With the Blues staring at relegation from the Premiership, salt was mercilessly rubbed into gaping wounds with Tuesday night's 7-0 FA Cup quarter-final humiliation to Liverpool at St Andrews.

McClaren can understand exactly how Bruce is feeling because it was only just over two months ago that Boro were beaten by the same scoreline in a league game at Arsenal.

As if that was not bad enough, during Boro's 4-0 Riverside defeat to Aston Villa three weeks later, McClaren was confronted by an angry fan who threw his season ticket towards the manager in disgust.

At that time, it appeared as if McClaren's job was on the line, but less than two months later the club are through to the last eight of the FA and UEFA Cups, while their league status is almost secure.

"I've every sympathy for Brucie for what he went through last night because I've been there. It's not nice," said McClaren.

"But what I do now about Steve is that he has strength of character. He had that as a player, and he's got it as a manager.

"His team has been riddled with injuries, as we were when we went to Arsenal. We were exactly the same.

"But we knew that eventually the sun would shine again, and we would get players back and start getting results."

McClaren added: "My message to Brucie is to remind him there are better days ahead, and that he has the character, the staff and the players to turn it around."

forget the fact that time is fast running out for us and that Boro can actually pass the ball around, it's pretty obvious that Mr McClaren hasn't met with Messrs Black and Bullivant on his travels here!

not only that but Bruce somehow needs to get to grips with his team selection, Painter instead of Clapham against Gerrard??? what was the thinking behind that one? world class player against a play who's only just starting his career, Dunn off again before the end of a game?? is he fit?? if he isn't WTF is he playing for?

Ah, isn't that nice.

No need to panic, we just need to wait, the sun will shine, and we will magically win enough games to survive.

Thanks for your brilliant insight McClaren.

i know its a minor point...but we were 5 or 6 nil down when Dunn went..whats the point of him risking injury..thats exactly why dunn and johnson went off. And to be honest they're the only two id keep for next year!

In theory thats sounds pretty good...Bruce putting it into practice not so good....and not very hopeful either!

mclaren eh? whats he know about football? its purely fluke that he won the first trophy 'boro ever won, and he's so lucky to still be in 2 cups as we approach the end of march, one of which is arguably the hardest trophy to win in europe for club teams...what does he know, eh?

I would imagine he knows a lot.

However, as with most managers and pundits, his interviews are filled with meaningless cliches and rhetoric.
