Is It Arrogance Or Pride.....; ...that keeps Steve in the job?

I'll hold my hand up and say that I was one who supported Brucie and berated those who wanted him out last year and am still inclined to see what happens at season's end.

However, those who think he will resign are kidding themselves. For SB to resign means that he will be admitting defeat and his own personal failure as a manager. What man would ever be willing to do that (except for Kevin Keegan). His personal pride will keep him going in the self-belief that he really can turn things around and that he has the professional skills and qualities to do the job, even if the facts point otherwise.

No manager will ever resign willingly: McCarthy, Souness, Megson. Francis, Cudicini, Perrin, Houllier, etc. etc. etc. The blow to the ego is too much to take and they would all still be in their jobs if not pushed.

Some say that he clearly can't motivate the players anymore, but as Tom Ross said last night , that's garbage. If 25k a week, palying infront of 30,000 avid fans and the chance to make the semis of the FA Cup for the first time in 30 years isn't motivation enough, then nothing is.

It may have been 30 yrs for us but to the players that didn't matter the longest any of them have been at the club is 4 or 5 years.

That's the difference we care they don't the only who did care last night was DJ and he had to be subbed to avoid a sending off.

Well after last night's performance even Bruce MUST question his managerial skills they amount to 0
It's been the same old story all season and any1 who actually watches BCFC regularly knew what was going to happen last night I certainly did!! A disgrace!

I dont think it is pride or arrogance. he is waiting for his 3.5 mill pay off for being sacked. Why resign and miss out on that?

Tom Ross was talking rubbish, imo.

I think that there are TWO over riding reasons for Steve Bruce to stay.

One:
He will not get a management job outside of the top 2 divisions again. Any prospective employer will look at his conduct and success rate. The "cost" of his "loyalty". His ability to adapt and deal with crisis.
I think he would be a coup for the likes of Bury or Lincoln. But for a man that saw himself as an England contender...no way would he have the humility to start again.

Two:
Money. His golden handshake.

I suspect that his reluctance to resign is down to pride and ambition.

He is still comparitively young & I'm sure that he had his eyes on managing Man Utd, Newcastle or England one day (didn't he mention the England job in an interview a couple of weeks ago ?)

If he clings on to the Blues job, turns things around & is eventually seen to be a success then he would still have a shot at those jobs.

If he resigns he will be labelled as a failure & will never achieve those ambitions.

I think its pure pride thats keeping him from resigning.

He's won things with Man Utd as a player and that mentality of being a winner has continued with him into management. He does not want to admit to failure and even though he's quite an honest manager, its his lack of honesty with himself thats preventing him from holding his hands up and admitting he's lost the influence over his players and squad.

Reason 1 - Why should I care??? - I care about BCFC not Steve Bruce

Reason 2 - Offer him installments say 10k a month for the next 29yrs or a lump sum of 1 million.

Steve really is the Harold Lloyd of football managers.
