If the States can overcome either of Portugal or Germany in the group then they'll probably deserve to win it Presume they are doing some climate conditioning as Natal, Recife and Manaus are going to be exceptionally hot and humid venues at that time of year .....Germany and Portugal might both struggle with that heat as will all of the European countries who have to play in the equatorial Northeast region and the Amazon basin The USA men's team can definitely get stronger as each tournament comes and goes though, I've often predicted they could be one of the Top 10 nations in the rankings in about 10-15 years from now as they're encouraging more and more youngsters to develop, in fact currently they sit 13th which is very respectable for a nation where our version of football is still well down the list for spectator involvement ....Last reached the quarter finals in 2002, they've qualified for every WC tournament since 1990 , apart from 1994 when they were the host country Will do well to match the 2002 this time......in Japan and Korea they only lost to the Germans 0-1 ....who in turn went on to lose the Final Two Premier League goalkeepers in their preliminary 30 man squad (Howard and Guznan)....plus a few players who play throughout Europe ....Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore is a decent strike pairing.......quite a young squad as well http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/usa/10826854/USA-World-Cup-squad-Eddie-Johnson-left-out-as-Jurgen-Klinsmann-names-Landon-Donovan-in-forwards-list.html ---------------------------------------- Edited by PartisanBCFC, May 14 2014, 11:00 AM.

The States will do well to finish third in that group. I was listening to an American broadcaster talking about soccer and the MLS. He was actually talking about how Fox and ESPN have gambled on the rights for MLS and NBC have gambled on the rights for Premier League .... and that the MLS needs the USA to do well in the World Cup if it is to make bigger in-roads and in other words Fox and ESPN need USA to do well in the World Cup. Personally I don't give two hoots about soccer in the States - I subscribe for my MLB coverage and my NFL coverage. I can watch all the Mets games for just a £12 subscription. It's about £100 for me to be able to watch all the Redskins games. Anyway back to topic, can you ex-Pats see the USA getting out of their Group? ...and also do you cheer-on the States in their games and go out of your way to watch them? To be honest, lowds......No But if they were to upset either Germany or Portugal with one of those two going home early , I'd love it Always one or two underdogs or surprise teams in the WC Remember Cameroon in 1990 ? ....Didn't Algeria beat Germany once ? Blimey, I can even recall North Korea way back in 1966 and a striker by the name of 'Pak Doo Ik' becoming a legend up at Middlesbrough's old Ayresome ground and the old Roker Park......made me laugh 'cause he was a corporal in their huge Army at the time (I bet the whole team probably all were as well....LOL ) and his goal against Italy earned him a promotion to a sergeant :LMAO: Then they went 3-0 up v Portugal only to leak five :ball: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/international/3036174/Pak-Doo-Ik-takes-the-spotlight-once-more.html
I will cheer them on as they are the underdogs............but England are my first and only love ....and they are the team I will be supporting as a patriot Same as when we play the USA ourselves ......I always support England and want us to win..... On that subject the USA achieved one of the greatest shocks ever in World Cup history ......they beat then Mighty England 1-0 in Brazil back in 1950.......Crikey, hope that's not a bad omen **thumbup Edited by PartisanBCFC, May 14 2014, 09:06 PM.

No way. Spain are too old/past it/sterile/old hat. Germany do not have a striker. Belgium appear to be Europes best bet, but do they have the experience? Will they be naive? The winner will come from South America. Argentina are my favourites. You can't discount Brazil as it's their World Cup. For those who like a bet how about Uruguay or Columbia for an each way? |

Germany do not need a striker, just like Spain haven't. Muller can play striker and he took his Pokal winning goal very well tonight. Belgium are a decent team as they've got some decent players but I don't think they have enough after a lot of their players have had poor season's; Lukaku hasn't done much (he's scored a few but usually just tap-ins), Vertongen has been very prone to mistakes, Vermaelan's barely played. Their central midfield overall is quite average with Dembele, Fellaini, Witsel etc which is crucial for these tournaments. Spain and Germany still have the world's best midfield's which is why they'll do well for me. Dominate the midfield and dominate the game. Hazard, Kompany, Mirallas & Courtois are the only two who seem to stand out as having decent season's. Argentina have an amazing forward line but their defence lacks apart from Zabaleta and they'll be found out. Brazil and Uruguay are decent shouts. I underestimated Uruguay before I saw the squad they announced, I didn't realise half of them were Urguayan. They've got some excellent players who've had decent season's in Pereira, Godin, Cacares, etc. Then you have the forward line that doesn't even need mentioning. Possibly like Belgium though and lacking a little bit in central midfield. Edited by .Jake, May 17 2014, 11:56 PM.

Completely agree with you Jake. I'm thinking of backing Spain (betting wise) this year as i think people will underestimate them (like Lowdham already has) and they will just dominate and win games 1-0 like they did in the Euro's. Belgium have great individual players, but i don't think they're good enough to win a World Cup yet. I'm sure they'll be a real force at the Euro's in France though. Uraguay do look like a solid outfit. Might put something on them to win it too, although i'm not sure they have the squad depth to go all the way. Argentina are perhaps the favourites for me. Don't they have a super easy run to the final if they win their group? I think Brazil will crack under the pressure. So with Spain's quality in depth, vast experience and pretty decent odds of 11/2, i think they'll have my backing. Uraguay at 28/1 is also very tempting for an outside bet. I can't wait for this to start!! :dancer: |

Without Messi, Argentina are pants Brazil have a much stronger squad Don't know much about Uruguay but they usually flop at most World Cups......although they did win the first one.......and the one in Brazil in 1950 Long time ago Has anyone mentioned Holland ? ......Along with Spain , The Dutch pose much more of a European threat than Germany and Belgium :kro: |

What? Messi has never "performed" for Argentina, which is why many say he has to prove himself to be up there with the real legendary all-time greats. The Argentine public are only warm to him, they're hot on Tevez. Argentina are my bet, followed by Brazil, followed by Uruguay. followed by Columbia. Can you see a pattern? That's right, no European countries. Edited by lowdham bluenose, May 19 2014, 08:52 AM.

i know he's not, hence the outcry and near riots when their squad was announced. Come what may, the word is Sabella goes after the World Cup. They ain't over-keen on Messi. Edited by lowdham bluenose, May 20 2014, 02:14 PM.

I get the feeling it'll be either Brazil or Argentina. I'm not even sure how it's all seeded, can they avoid each other all the way until the final? |

Some fun U.S.A. facts: the USMNT's best world cup finish: 3rd. It was an American that scored the first ever hat-trick in a world cup. Bert Patenaude and this was against Paraguay in 1930, the same year the U.S. took 3rd. Partisan: Parti secretly is rooting for the Yanks more than England. He will deny this but it is true! ;) |

England's first ever WC tournament ironically in Brazil back in 1950, saw them beaten 1-0 by the USA, the only goal of the game scored by a fellah named Joeseph Gaetjens who became a cult hero Stateside .........he was actually a Haitian, never even attained US citizenship and he returned to the Caribbean island and mysteriously disappeared (believed murdered) in the days of The Papa Doc regime (No, not the old Villa manager) .......fascinating story http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-26515082 Always laughed when I watched my first World Cup on US television back in 1994 The commentator kept using the term 'on the offense' instead of 'attacking' or 'going forward' .....I hated that .....and also when they use the term for no goals scored as zero or zip compared to 'nil'.....they also say 'tied' instead of 'drawn' when the match is level And the first segment of the 1st half was sponsored by Gillette, the next segment was sponsored by Kodak ......The HT show was sponsored by Tide detergent ..... the first segment of the 2nd half was sponsored by Macdonalds and the last segment was sponsored by Trojan condoms After the game , I immediately had a shave , threw several pairs of my undies in the washing machine , went out for a burger , took a picture of the girl who served me and then we performed safe sex in the parking lot Seriously though , I really do hope the US do well, they have some good players , many have PL and European experience and maybe send one of Germany or Portugal home early .....A huge long shot of course but this tourno always throws up a surprise or two And rest assured, England are the team I will be supporting......seriously :Eng06: :Eng06: Edited by PartisanBCFC, Jun 11 2014, 01:14 AM.
