Went out on their shield.

Tim Howard was unbelievable, and he deserved for Wondolowski to put that gilt-edged chance away at the end of normal time for what would have been an improbable win. After they went two down, they attacked brilliantly and had chances to not only draw, but win the match; yet over the course of 120 minutes (like every other match that's gone into extra time this world cup) the better team for the majority of the match won…

belgium: 38 shots, 27 on target, 71% shots on target
usa: 15 shots, 9 on target, 60% shots on target

19 belgium corners
4 usa corners

Belgium: 5 saves
usa: 18 saves

bar the first 10 mins of the 2nd half of extra time it was a pure massacre. The usa were demolished. Only howard and poor finishing stopped belgium from hitting a world cup scoring record

Want some salt for that chip on your shoulder, Pooley?

Whatever you think of their country if you can't appreciate what a marvellous game that was, thanks largely to the sheer guts, determination and never say die attitude of the underdogs from the USA then I pity you.

Well played Team USA, you have earned the respect of the footballing world at this tournament and will be sadly missed in the next round.

no chip on my shoulder - I just dont understand why twitter, facebook etc is full of people saying the usa should have won?

Yes they showed guts and a level of fitness to cary on, but its the world cup for gods sake, they shouldnt be applauded for that, its the MINIMUM EXPECTED.

They were a much poorer team, yes they carried on fighting til the end and all that jazz but they were outclassed and outplayed for 110 of the 120 minutes.

Like I say, applauding a team for playing whistle to whistle in the world cup, the biggest football competiton in the world is silly!

Also more would probably a bit more magnanimous if it wasnt such an arrogant country

To be fair, I did say that Belgium were the better side for the majority of the match, but I maintain that Howard deserved for that Wondolowski sitter to hit the back of the net at the end of normal time; a goalkeeping performance such as that shouldn't end in defeat.

I read that it was 18 Belgian shots on target (not 27), with 16 saves by Howard, but either way, yes, Belgium had far more shots and shots on target, so understandably fewer saves to make.

The entirety of extra time was fantastic, and it really could've gone either way in the end.

There is no doubt the Belgians dominated the majority of the game and deserved to win, but then you would expect them to considering the number of top class players they have in their squad. USA are a team with no stars, unless you want to count the goalkeeper and a guy who was good for a couple of seasons at Fulham a few years back, yet they pushed Belgium all the way and I think they deserve credit for that.

Yes I suppose maximum effort is the least you can expect from professional sportsmen, but when through that effort an unfancied team is able to bridge a huge gulf in class and stay in contention right up until the final whistle then they are deservedly being praised for it.

Are you telling me you've never watched an FA Cup tie where a lower league team pushes a top side all the way only to come up agonisingly short? In this situation do you just dismiss their efforts as the minimum you would expect or do you congratulate them on a fantastic performance and their contribution to a great game? It's the same situation here.

Finally so what if the people back home aren't bothered about 'soccer'? That's not the players fault and hardly a reason to wish ill on them. That they can bust their guts for 120 minutes while knowing full well that the vast majority of their home country couldn't care less how they get on must be hard to take. If anything it makes their performance even more remarkable in my opinion.

Good to see some posters on here have risen above Pooley's obvious and quite pathetic bias and observed what a quite fantastic match that was

Yes, Belgium were the better side during normal time but the Americans played with a fighting heart and spirit that even England could learn from .....they ran their hearts out and never gave up until the final whistle and yes, they could have even stolen it in extra time......What surprised me is that how fit the Americans seemed to be (athleticism has always been in their genes of their leading sportsmen and women, The Yanks tend to produce the best tennis players, the best track runners and the best boxers on the planet )

Yes, it's true most Americans won't be too bothered by the exit, our type of football which they simply refer to as soccer will never be the national pastime but it has grown immensely to what is now a top a recreation sport for youngsters across the entire 50 states and the USA are now near the top of the world rankings and this current team have stimulated the interest of many more and more US citizens .....Costa Rica have also shown how far the CONCACEF nations have progressed and Mexico put up a terrific fight despite having one their worse ever qualifying periods the year previous

The USA continue to progress and progress in world football as time goes on

England meanwhile seem to decline and decline ......Hurts me immensely to say that but it's a harsh truth

Jurgen should be rightly proud of his men tonight :applause:

What's your point exactly ?

That we Brummies should stick to marrying Brummie women

If I'd have done that I might have ended up with one that actually knew you previously

Dunno if I could ever have lived with that

You should cross the Atlantic yourself .........you might be pleasantly surprised what a great nation it is and has much to offer to tourists ......ask Lowhdam, he loves it......the people are friendly too

Sigh

Ever heard of Félix Savón? 3 time Olympic gold medal winning boxer. Also Cuba have win more gold medals in boxing than America. If your referring to glitz and glamour boxing then America might have big named but that's because most promoters are American

In tennis, there isn't an American in the top ten world rankings (there are however 2 Spanish and 2 Swiss)

Need I go on? More lies and hot air from the good ol us-of-a who feel they need to win or be the best at everything.

I mean look at it this way, there is a computer game ( Air Force Vietnam) where, to win the game you have to win the Vietnam war. You play a us pilot. How pathetic is that ? They can't face they lost the war so try to rewrite history in video game form. Pathetic. It's like Germany bringing out a game where Nazis win world war 2. So sad

Just saying some people exhaust every avenue then need to settle for travelling all the way to the land of the fat home of the brave (although they pad up to high heaven to play rugby, and only invade countries they can bully) to find someone who will put up with them.

What about the rest of my post where I proved you wrong?

So you say "the yanks tend to produce the best tennis players".

Well out of the top 10 men and top 10 women (ie top 20 players) 1 is American. That's. 5% of the worlds top players. So 95% are not American. Ergo, your comment is factually incorrect

I meant to use the past tense

As for both Summer and Winter Olympic medals the United States leads the way by far (from 1896 to present) .....an impressive 2,681

Anyways, this is what I took from the match:

We were completely outclassed. Possession was not something we could really achieve and they had many more chances. Bradley did well defensively but I feel like he gave the ball away too much. Jones was off. Our best player by far was Howard. What an immense effort. Our best field player IMO was Yedlin. Sure, he got caught going up too much sometimes, but his bombing runs were often the start of our only/few chances. He looked quite solid for a 20 year old. What a great talent.
Obviously we lost the midfield battle. No question. I thought we were tough defensively though. We were in our own half the majority of the game yet the defensive always forced their team to shoot aan t angle at Howard. Only a couple times were they allowed to strike from a central location.

Overall Im very proud of the team. A great and entertaining bit of overtime and I'm glad we didn't go down without a fight.
This world cup has definitely raised the popularity of soccer in the USA. Here's a pic from Soldier Field:

You missed one of the best games of the Group of 16 matches then

:boohoo:

The Argentina v Switzerland game lacked a lot of thrills I thought......You know when it's not going to be your day when you hit the post with a good header in the final minute to grab an equaliser, the ball rebounds back at you and hits you on the leg and then goes wide

Poor old Swiss, they deserved something from that
