STEVE Bruce today expressed hope key duo Jermaine Pennant and Emile Heskey would be fit for tomorrow's game at Everton.

Both limped off during Wednesday's victory over Blackburn Rovers to put the creaking Wast Hills treatment table under further strain.

"We will leave it to the last possible minute and although I would say they are 50-50 as we speak, they might have a chance," the manager said.

Mario Melchiot came on for Pennant at right-wing and Mikael Forssell substituted Heskey and scored a priceless goal. It would be intriguing to see if Bruce persevered with Melchiot in the same position from the off at Goodison Park.

The logical alternative would be to move Damien Johnson to the flank but he has been influential as a central midfield scrapper during Blues' revival since the FA Cup battering by Liverpool.
Jiri Jarosik could be a contender to play there, but there is no guarantee he will have recovered from a hamstring strain that has kept him out of the last two matches.

Everton has never been a particularly happy hunting ground for Blues, but the Toffeemen are out of form and have not won in five games.

Blues need a result of some sort as Portsmouth entertain Sunderland at Fratton Park tomorrow. Incredibly, the midweek fixture was the first time Blues had scored more than one goal in 13 attempts.

Bruce said: "The main thing is we won against Blackburn when we were under a lot of pressure, against a very good team.

"It's given us another boost after the Villa result. On Monday, I was at Coventry-Leicester and when the news came through that Portsmouth were 1-0 up at Charlton, I felt as sick as every Birmingham fan must have done.

"The second-half was just a blur. All my thoughts were about what was happening at the Valley. I was getting into my car when I got a text off my daughter to say Charlton had equalised - thank God for Bryan Hughes, what a sale that was!

"I was driving up the M6 listening to the radio when they went 'and now straight to the Valley' and you immediately think the worst.

"That's what this situation does to you - just as you think you're right up against it, things turn right around and it's turned in our favour yet again. We must make sure we capitalise on that."

That'll do me. I think it means that'll probably start on the bench. I think it'd wise to start the Forss anyway.
