Just reading Bruce's preview for the game tomorrow. Boy Kilkenny must have done something wrong, or is indeed invisible. Bruces talks about Pennant being 50/50 - saying that if he doesn't make it he may be "forced" to play Melchiot as a "makeshift" right winger again, and get this, the "only other alternative" is to put in youngster Mat Birley for his first start.

Now I know DJ has been doing a stellar job in the centre of the park, but he IS a right winger also - so there is an alternative...but I guess if he did move him out to right wing that would mean Bruce would have to play Kilkenny or Nafti in his place..but we wouldn't want that would we..

I'm hoping he plays for the Socceroos in the World Cup, then Bruce might actually take notice of him.

He should have been given a chance before now but it's hardly the time to go experimenting with inexperienced players.

He hasn't got enough games in.

You're absolutely right and it's doing my head. I've been racking my brain trying to think what he did wrong. The emergence of Kilkenny has been one of the few bright spots this season. I wouldn't mind if he was on the bench, but not to be selected at all is criminal. I can only think they have had a fallout because it just doesn't make sense.

Exactly, it could be why we rarely seem to bring too many youngsters through succesfully. I mean last season, Carl Motteram and Peter Til were supposed to be going to be the next best thing...they've now all but dissappeared from the picture and If I remember rightly Motteram is supposed to be leaving on a free to some Irish club.

This season its all been about Kilkenny, Sadler, Painter, Asa Hall and Doyle..i wonder how many of them will continue to progress next season. It seems that we find our best young players, get them to the verge of first team football - play them once - they impress - we ship em out to a non league or league 2 side on loan where they dont play - or play and do well, then we release them on free transfers or sell em.

And Im not suggesting that all of them are even going to make the grade, but when you look at some teams - including the Vile - they seem to be quite confident about fielding their youngsters, and they all seem to go from strength to strength.

David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Owen, Fowler, Cole, Scholes and many many more were all young inexperienced, "raw" players when they first started playing for their respective teams...but look where they are now.

thing is i can see where bruce is coming from even if kilkenny is availible...DJ is not the sort of winger who will get crosses in, brucie will be aiming to win the midfield battle and punish them down the wings...both of these things cant be done (imo) without DJ in the middle and someone else on the right..

I would have agreed with pushing DJ out wide if Gray had not of played so well against blackburn. I know it's slightly defensive but I'd start with Melchiot wide right but have the option on the bench; Everton haven't won for 5 games on the trot so the longer it stays at 0-0 (or even 0-1 he says hopefully) then the more likely their fans are to get on their back. The last thing we want to do is go to Everton and get beaten 3 or 4-0, especially if Portsmouth beat Sunderland 2 or 3-0; that goal difference may be valuable at the end of the season

Putting the injury to one side - I think that for Kilkenny you could read Brian Hughes - Same position, same type of player and Bruce ignores both.

Why?????

But none of them were thrust into teams fighting relegation. For every player that you can name there is one where the expectation was too great and was pushed too early and fell by the wayside. Kilkenny has had plenty of starts this season and has been brought on well by Bruce. If he had forgotten about him or didn’t rate he would have not been around the first team as much as he has this season. Picking flies or what?

Bruce didn't ignore Hughes at all - and he hasn't ignored Kilkenny (although he was too relunctant to play him at first for my liking) the fact of the matter is Kilkenny is a bit too lightweight right now and I guess he is injured for tommorow.

I think he said something of the same about Hughes

Hughes wasn't too lightweight though if Brucie said it then he was wrong, but to me Hughes (a player we really miss imo) got a decent run considering we were primarily purely a spoiling team and so Devs and Dj were better suited to that - While Sav and Clem was a very good pairing, as well balanced as Veira and Petit were.

Personally I thought Mario did superbly as a second RM, he has ability even if he does't always use it, he's far quicker than Jonty, he can win the ball on the right and is strong enough to keep it.

Yes... Kilkenny should have played more this season but
No... Jonty should not be on the right.

it's playing players out of position that has in some part contributed to our poor form (in general) this season.
