What approach do we adopt towards next season? Start again or try and maintain the squad we have eg keep big players like forssell and dunn. This includes SB of course. I myself feel that such a shambolic season can't be sold by moving on a couple even if it is nicky butt. We should have never even been looking at relegation and there is something clearly wrong. I think we need to overhaul everything, perhaps including SB. Our most notable january addition was DJ Campbell. Players like Kilkenny have impressed ahead of the big guns so maybe we do just need hard working younger players like sullivan said. I think we need to lose the obvious four pointed out in his interview but also heskey because heskey, upson (we all know he doesn't wanna be our player, he's turned down new deals all year and only kept here through our renewal option. Cunningham, lazaridis, izzet, dunn, forssel and maybe more. Not because they've done badly so much, just new beginnings. Bring on the championship.

This is how I see it:

Definitely to go:

Martin Taylor
Clapham
Izzet
Latka
Stan
Jarosik
Heskey
Butt
Gray
A. Bruce
Melchiot
Sutton

Young Ones, must keep:

Kilkenny
DJC
Oji
Painter

Player & Coaching Staff:

Cunningham

Main Players we need to keep:

Maik Taylor
Vaesen
DJ
Nafti
Pennant (please!!)
Forsell
Clemence

Tricky Decisions:

Dunn (Basically, I love the guy but is it going to be viable?)
Upson (Won't be fit until next season, so can't go yet)
Tebs (You never know what he's going to do next, but he may stay, not sure)

That's still 12-15 offloaded, which is a lot in anyone's book **thumbup

I agree with blueberry, except :

- dunn has to go, imo. an expensive liability.

- would keep a.bruce. can't see that he has done anything wrong.

- upson can go too.

i think we definitely need someone better than Gray, and LM is not Dunn's favoured position

we definitely need a new CB

we defnitely need a striker (although i agree DJC and Forssell looks decent on paper)

we need an attacking midfielder, and i would play DJ as a CDM in a Makelele role

these arent luxuries, these are essential if we're going go get back into the Premiership IMO

oh yeah and sack Bruce and the coaches ;)

I really think we need to take the expert medical advice on Dunn- and none of us know what it is.

Yes we cant keep him on if he is never going to be fit, but we would be right idiots to let him go then see him turn up fit and healthy ripping defences apart elsewhere.

Players do recover after an injury hell. Look at Furlong (called sicknote for us but OK for QPR till 37) and we could have given up on Sadler last summer with two years of injuries and a record as bad as Dunns.

fair points, and i must admit i can't decide if i'd keep dunny or not - his heart is clearly there for blues but his body doesn't appear able to cope with the rigours of the prem...and it's even more physical with more games in the cc league, but if he did have a spell of fitness he could be the difference between promotion and not....

I'd assumed that we've taken expert medical advice previously. (I suspect that like much professional advice - solicitors, surveyors, accountants - there is much ar5e covering, use of caveats and use of ambiguous language. i.e. I doubt whether any medic will say "definitely a crock" or "definitely fit" : it will still be down to Blues to weigh up the risks).

Dunn is such a good player that the prospect of him being fit has led us to make bad decisions, imo. It's like a gambler on a losing streak who thinks that one more bet could wipe out his losses.

Maybe Dunny will get back to full fitness one day, but - with our limited wages budget - that feels like an unwise gamble. Every penny we spend on dunn's wages is a penny less we can spend elsewhere.

Put it this way : say, Dunn had spent the last few seasons at Boro (for example), had played very few games & had a dreadful injury record, with little sign that full fitness is imminent. How would we feel about Blues signing him, given our limited budget and his high wages ?

I would prefer us to spend the money on somebody who we fully expect to play 30 games next season, so we just have to be decisive & let Dunn go.

Agree with Mr.Penguin wholeheartedly, imo we have to let Dunn go and so what if he goes somewhere else and has a good run of form, after all he would,nt be the first player we have sold who has done this, he is a drain on the clubs resources and if we are going to spend another season waiting for him to get back to full fitness while not signing anyone to cover him, its going to be long season.

We need to get younger with the squad. Bruce won't do it, but we need to build with fresher legs.

.....................Taylor...................

New RB/Bruce........Oji.......Painter.......Sadler

Pennant........DJ/Nafti........Kilkenny.....New Winger(Reid - Spurs)

.............Forsell.......DJC...............

Subs:
Clem
New Striker
Kenny
Doyle

Recovering:
Dunn
Izzet
Upson

pretty much agree, except i see no point in offloading tiny taylor, especially with a championship season ahead of us !

I also think we'll keep Julian Gray, but purely to be used as an out and out winger !

From your keep list, i think Pennant will have to go as he is probably the only member of the current squad that we could sell and actually turn a profit on !

People will have different opinions about different players, whether it's Gray, DJ, or whoever. But I don't see, based on all of his performances I've seen, you can make an argument for keeping him. He is, in my opinion, such a liability that I would be very worried about the future if he stayed. I respect the way he has hung on in there, but I think he will get torn apart by many Championship strikers. I really think he will struggle, and we need someone much better.

Just my opinion. ;)

I know !

But no matter how ungamely he looks, and he does, when all is said and done he was part of the defence that conceeded less goals in the last ten or so games than any other had managed in the last 18 months ! Keeping out the likes of Drogba, Crespo, Robben, Davies, Beattie, Owen etc etc along the way !

It was our faliure at the other end during our final run in that was ultimately the nail !

like Chelsea, Bolton, Everton and Newcastle have torn him apart in the last month to such an extent that none of them could score.

Like Blackburn and Wigan just managed one goal each.

He was only bough as cover and has done OK recently.

No I dont want him as first choice but he could well be the best replacement centre half in the Championship. We will need one.
