HERE IS THE STORY FROM icbirmingham.com

Blues stunner as axe falls on KennyMay 9 2006

By Colin Tattum

THE clear-out at Blues continued today when it emerged that captain Kenny Cunningham would not be staying at the club.

Manager Steve Bruce had said there was a chance the 34-year-old former Ireland skipper could be retained.

Bruce revealed that after the axe fell on seven other players over the weekend, Cunningham was the only senior out-of-contract squad member Blues were continuing to talk to.

But all of a sudden Cunningham has now also been deemed surplus to requirements as cost-cutting measures continue to bite hard at St Andrew's.

Shocking way to treat such a player :(

Cunningham has been by far my fave player since our time in the premiership, I'm quite gutted we're letting him go as I feel he could have easily had one more season in the championship and hopefully captain the side back up :(

Thanks for the past four seasons Kenny, you will always be the King in our eyes!

Shocking way to treat such a player :(

Now, I like Kenny as a player and think he could do a job for at least one more season in the Championship, but why assume they've treated him shockingly.

It's quite possible that they have of course but from what we can gather Blues were talking to him so probably made him an offer. If he refuses that it's not the club's fault.

Just because some scratty journalist thinks he's been "deemed surplus to requirements" doesn't actually mean he has.

Now he is one I WILL miss.

This means that we have to buy two new centre backs now as starting the season with a centre-back partnership of Alex Bruce and Martin Taylor is the sort of stuff that gives you nightmares at night.

Kenny Cunningham has possibly been the best captain Birmingham have ever had, And he has been a great leader and a great defender for us for four years, He has been injury free for most of it two and I am really going to miss watching him playing in a Birmingham shirt, Thanks for 4 great years Kenny.

Coincidentally I have just bumped into Kenny at the gym about 2 hours ago, had a bit of a chat. He was very disappointed with the season and felt sorry for the fans mostly. Hadn't decided what he was going to do next. Very open, good chat.

He has been realy good for Blues, and we could probably do with him this coming season, esp if we have lots of new and younger players there.

We could have done with him in and around the squad you can't buy that sort of experience.

Probably the best player (Dugarry aside) we've had in our spell in the prem

Biggest loss we've had in the last 4 years. Kenny thanks for your excellent work. Your consistency, game reading and professionalism has made you an asset to this club, and the fans will be genuinely sorry to lose you.

All the very best.

Have a feeling there is more to this than he (Kenny) and the club will say.
It was always said even by SB that they hoped he would stay for 1 more season, now after talks something has happened.
Did the club only offer him half his wage from last contract like they are with SB or was Kenny wanting more money?
Who knows only him and the club will I feel.

All the best Kenny, but now we have to look to the future

Gutted :( , King Kenny you are a blues legend!

You always gave us fans 100% commitment and you showed the amount of respect you have when you told how disgusted you were with the way the blonde one left!

Keep right on King Kenny!

One things for sure 'There's only one Kenny Cunningham' **thumbup

lets not worry about why he left or who's fault he may/may not have been. Lets just thank him for his time and ensure that we don't destroy the record he had for the club by discussing contract stuff.

Cheers Ken - Good Luck
