Why I've left Birmingham City

As of today I can confirm that I've left Birmingham City.

I am out of contract and have decided to leave the club. It was my decision and despite having had a great time here over the last two years I feel that the time is right for me to move on.

I've known for a while in my own mind that I wouldn't be staying at St Andrew's but I can promise Blues fans that I haven't given any thought to what will happen next in my career. My entire focus has been on trying to help Birmingham throughout the season. I even asked my agent not to tell me about any interest from other clubs, so that I wouldn't be distracted.

Whether I was on the pitch, on the street, in a bar, or in a restaurant, the fans always made me feel special.

I will now sit down with my agent to discuss what happens next. I think I will take my time over the decision because it has to be the right one. I'm on a Bosman free transfer and need to give it careful thought. I really like it in England, so I will definitely be looking at options in the Premiership, but I can't say for sure that I will stay here. As a footballer I will look at every opportunity that presents itself, no matter where it is.

I really want to say a big thank you to the Birmingham fans for giving me such great support over the last two years. Whether I was on the pitch, on the street, in a bar, or in a restaurant, they always made me feel special.

I just feel so sorry for the fans that Birmingham have gone down to the Championship. It gives me a very bad feeling when I think about how upset they are about what has happened on the pitch.

Relegation is such a huge disappointment to me too. I will never ever forget how bad it feels to go down. The only positive I can take from it as a player is that I have now experienced everything in the game. I've won things, I've nearly won things, I've been in the middle, and now I've been at the bottom. All I can say is that it feels terrible to be at the bottom. I never want to taste what we've tasted this season again.

A lot of people told me that I should have left Birmingham a long while ago, but I didn't listen to them. I made a commitment to sign a two-year contract and was always going to honour it properly. There is no way on earth that I was going to walk out on the club at the first sign of difficult times. Even though it has been a hard experience this season I am still glad I stayed. I feel as if I did the right thing by honouring the contract.

It was emotional saying goodbye to the Blues fans that travelled to Bolton on Sunday. They were tremendous and when I walked over to applaud them, they gave me a great reception. It made me feel so happy and proud too. I will miss the Blues fans a great deal, not least because they gave me a buzz of excitement every time I got to the ball.

I wish them the best of luck next season and for the future.

Cheerio Mario

i would love to ask him one question before he does go - Despite of the teams performance how can he excuse some of his woeful performances this season?

I'd like to ask the same question to the rest of the disapointing bunch that have also left.

It shows no loyality of what he said, he will be looking for options in the premiership instead of helping us out of the championship. That P5sses me off, but good luck mario thx for some great seasons

Thanks Mario, a few shaky performances this season but the first season IMHO player of the season!

Also one of the most skillful players to grace st andrews, i'll always remember Hendrie's face, hadn't got a clue where the ball was!

Cheers Mario and good luck! **thumbup
