Mario,

Thank you for the 2 years you gave BCFC. It has been emotional to say the least.

I wish you well in the future, whatever you choose to do and maybe we'll see you at St Andrews commentating on our Premiership and European Cup games in the future.

Keep Right On.

Thanks for the setting the record straight and saying goodbye Mario- I guess your comments won't get in the press like some of the other 'non-stories' and 'mis-quotes' that have made some of the fans think you weren't committed to us.

We saw what it meant to you on Sunday so thank you.

Come back and see us on our promotion party....you'll realise that going down only makes you stronger....and makes us party harder ;) - this is why us Bluenoses are so passionate about our team!!!

Best wishes and good luck.

As Mandy says, thank you. I have critiscised your poor performances of late because I know you have the talent to do better, its just a pity that it won't be here. You did well for us in the beginning but in the end in didn't work out. You have set the record straight and we really appreciate that.

Thank you for the good times and all the best for the future.

Why I've left Birmingham City

As of today I can confirm that I've left Birmingham City.

I am out of contract and have decided to leave the club. It was my decision and despite having had a great time here over the last two years I feel that the time is right for me to move on.

I've known for a while in my own mind that I wouldn't be staying at St Andrew's but I can promise Blues fans that I haven't given any thought to what will happen next in my career. My entire focus has been on trying to help Birmingham throughout the season. I even asked my agent not to tell me about any interest from other clubs, so that I wouldn't be distracted.

Whether I was on the pitch, on the street, in a bar, or in a restaurant, the fans always made me feel special.

I will now sit down with my agent to discuss what happens next. I think I will take my time over the decision because it has to be the right one. I'm on a Bosman free transfer and need to give it careful thought. I really like it in England, so I will definitely be looking at options in the Premiership, but I can't say for sure that I will stay here. As a footballer I will look at every opportunity that presents itself, no matter where it is.

I really want to say a big thank you to the Birmingham fans for giving me such great support over the last two years. Whether I was on the pitch, on the street, in a bar, or in a restaurant, they always made me feel special.

I just feel so sorry for the fans that Birmingham have gone down to the Championship. It gives me a very bad feeling when I think about how upset they are about what has happened on the pitch.

Relegation is such a huge disappointment to me too. I will never ever forget how bad it feels to go down. The only positive I can take from it as a player is that I have now experienced everything in the game. I've won things, I've nearly won things, I've been in the middle, and now I've been at the bottom. All I can say is that it feels terrible to be at the bottom. I never want to taste what we've tasted this season again.

A lot of people told me that I should have left Birmingham a long while ago, but I didn't listen to them. I made a commitment to sign a two-year contract and was always going to honour it properly. There is no way on earth that I was going to walk out on the club at the first sign of difficult times. Even though it has been a hard experience this season I am still glad I stayed. I feel as if I did the right thing by honouring the contract.

It was emotional saying goodbye to the Blues fans that travelled to Bolton on Sunday. They were tremendous and when I walked over to applaud them, they gave me a great reception. It made me feel so happy and proud too. I will miss the Blues fans a great deal, not least because they gave me a buzz of excitement every time I got to the ball.

I wish them the best of luck next season and for the future.

Don't let him sweeten you up. He could of stayed if he wanted. He's not performed and contributed to relegation.

I wish I had a sharp pair of metal studs and could play against him. :)

Can you never just say thank you for the good times and let it be? Yeah things have gone wrong of late so criticise him for that but theres no harm in saying thank you for the good he did.

I could show true emotion if i was having to move house (even to a better one) and move on after two years .. especially if my £20000 (or what ever it is) paycheques were going to stop for a few weeks! ... and I had played so bad my potential value and earnings were down
he says some great words .. but none address the real issue of what went wrong ... he will have my respect when he says why?
he might be a really nice guy .. but who on here truely knows him well enought to say?

thanks for the first season mario .. you were great to watch

I've been one of Mario's critics this season but I disagree with that.

He doesn't need to make himself look good in our eyes. He could have left without a word or, more typical these days, with some parting shot about what a cr@p club we are.

Easy to thank the fans when you are being worshipped, shows some class to do it after you've been booed. Fair play to him.

To all those criticising Mario for leaving now, how do any of you know he didn't always intend to give us 2 years then go? His contract finished and he has moved on. There's no malice or hidden agenda in that. Many players move on. Many players stay. That's life. It happens in every profession.

This is how I'd expect a model professional to act.

From Skysports.....

Mario Melchiot has revealed he plans to stay in England after quitting Birmingham.

The full back is looking for a new club after seeing out his contract at St Andrews.

The former Chelsea star has no regrets over leaving Birmingham and is hoping to secure a move to The Premiership.

"No I am definitely not staying," Melchiot told Sky Sports News. "I have made my decision already and we spoke about it at the end of the season.

"I gave them an opportunity (to keep him) definitely through the winter. I said 'if I don't agree with things I will make my move' and I did that."

Melchiot was coy over his future insisting no decision had been made over his new employers.

"Yeah Sky Sports came and I made my decision," joked Melchiot. "No at the moment when you are in the situation of fighting relegation the last thing is to speak to someone else and focus on another club.

"So then I said to my agent we have to wait until we're finished. He went on holiday and has just come back. I'll go away for a bit and then sit down and make the right decision for myself.

"For me the most important thing is I had a good time at Birmingham. I had a two-year deal and didn't walk, I finished my deal.

"So I didn't walk out on the situation (of relegation) for any other reason and I'm ready to move on.''

The Dutchman admitted he had considered a move abroad, but that his preference is to stay in England.

"OK I was already wanting to make a move abroad, but England always keeps me right here at the moment.

"I still have to look here and I will see if I stay in England and see if it's really a place I want to go to.

"Then you understand I'll make my decision."
