Birmingham sacks Lazaridis
By Peter Kogoy
May 10, 2006

SOCCEROO Stan Lazaridis has played his last game for Birmingham City after being sacked by manager Steve Bruce yesterday.

Lazaridis, 34, was one of eight Blues players shown the door at St Andrews as a wages cost-cutting measure just days after the club was relegated from the English Premiership.

The Perth-born left-back, a veteran of 139 appearances in seven seasons with the Blues, has been targeted by A-League side Adelaide United.

United's coach John Kosmina yesterday confirmed his club's interest in the Socceroo saying: "I'm reasonably confident of getting Stan.

"Obviously we'd love to have him but I understand that Perth, for obvious reasons, along with the Newcastle Jets and New Zealand Knights, has expressed strong interest."

Although born in Perth, Lazaridis had three seasons with the former Adelaide Sharks before heading overseas.

Lazaridis arrived at St Andrews in 1999 after 69 appearances with West Ham United. He became a firm favourite with Blues fans.

Does that mean Stan could of been 1 of the 2 players that never played v Bolton?

No, it means that Murdoch-related Aussie-Yank press, don't know the difference between being "sacked" and not having a contract renewed.

Come on man, the term "sacked" came up from the gutter press in Australia. They're even thicker than yanks ! If thats possible.

Stan didn't play at all during the last few weeks because of a clause in his contract apparently, where if he made one more apperance he would get a new deal.

You judge the whole Aussie press on one article? Sheesh!

I did notice it earlier too and had a good chuckle but having spent a year in Australia I can assure you that the press over there tends to be a lot better than over here. Although they're not capable of being unbiased where Aussies are concerned.

Stan could not have been the player refusing to play as he was already over here when the Bolton game was played.

He is playing in 2 weeks in the Australia v Greece friendly.

I thought it odd that he was here before our season finished.

But he was always going to be returning home at the end of the Blues season.
