I was asked my opinion on names by a friend who's looking for a traditionally English name. When I looked deeper at this I began to see names that I thought were English, not being so. I then began to think about names and regions of England. Are there names that are traditionally Birmingham names, London names, Yorkshire names etc? Does anyone know of local names or where they may be a link to them |

Really depends on the era In Victorian days and even the 1st half of the 20th century male names tended to be after past Kings and Royalty........George (also patron saint of England) ,Henry,Harold,Arthur,Alfred,William,Edward,Charles,Richard,James etc plus traditionally Anglo Saxon names such as John,Samuel,Sidney,Cyril and Stanley During the 50's and 60's parents tended to go for names like Terence,Roy,Robert,Colin etc and also Biblical names......Peter,Paul,Matthew,Mark,Michael,Jacob,Jude,Simon,Christopher,Bernard,Thomas etc etc Amongst the most popular female names again both religion and royalty had strong influences ...Ann,Jane,Katherine,Sarah but nowadays of course many parents will name both girls and boys usually after relatives or people who have influenced their lives (movie stars, pop stars, even footballers) I think the influence of Saints, religion and even heroes plays more of a part in countries like Scotland (Andrew and Mary are popular but so is Robert after Robert Bruce) and in Ireland (Patrick,Michael and Daniel and of course Mary) I dunno what happened in Australia of course because all the blokes seem to be called Gregg,Tim or Bruce This is a TRUE story .....a Liverpool mad fan named his daughter after the 1965 FA Cup winning team and coaches.....her birth certificate read.....Paula,St John,Lawrence,Lawler,Byrne,Strong,Yeats,Stevenson,Callaghan,Hunt,Milne,Smith,Thompson,Shankley,Bennet and Paisley O Sullivan Poor lass........imagine all the writing she's had to do at job interviews KRO |
