i quite liked the vlonderpark (sp?)

Ann Franks pad is worth a visit and quite moving at the end (i'm not afraid to admit that i did cry a little)

The flower market is a nice trip out.

Beware of the pick pockets at the grande central station. We had this one guy who was really asking for a taste of my knuckles!

Beware of trams - they move fairly fast and to be honest are one of the last things you remember to look out for.

When we went we just spent hours walking around and moving away from the tourist areas. There are some really nice little streets with some nice (none drug) cafes if your prepared to walk a lot and go find them

As someone who lived and worked there for 4months I know a fair bit about Amsterdam!!

4 nights is a long time in the 'Dam. You'll be surprised how quickly you can cover the main city - from Centraal Station to the Vondelpark (basically the northern and southern extent of the city) is only about 2-3 miles.

Once you've done all the usual tourist stuff, take some time walking around the Spiegelquarter - there are some great cafes and bars and if the weathers good, brilliant just to watch the world go by.

The new science and technology museum at Nemo on the River Ij is supposed to be worth a visit (not there when I was there) - from the top you can get great views.

The Red Light District is worth a visit - it is probably safer at night than it is in the day due to the number of tourists there. Be warned the Southern area around Niewekirke is very seedy and can be dangerous (it seems the favoured area for smackheads)

If you do feel the urge to try out any 'specialist' smoking venues, steer clear of the tourist areas of RLD, Rembrantplein, Dam Square, Liedsersplein and go to the more bohemian coffeeshops in the artists quarter. The coffeeshops near the tourist areas are full of 'binge smokers' from the UK over for a 'big weekend' and can be intimidating.

Leidersplein is good place to eat and a boat trip in the morning is a good way of sobering up. The pushers are best off just ignored, don't even answer, just walk straight past.

I've only been on a lad's weekend before now but I've just bagged 2 flights for me and the wife next March for the £40 a go, so I'll be doing the more scenic tour then.

..and if I remember right a taxi into the city centre from the airport is about £40 one way, while a train is about £7 return.

That was 3 years ago.

A barge trip sounds a bit corny but is actually really enjoyable, if you get a good guide

KLM Bus is even cheaper

Amsterdam is certainly an 'eye opener' though

Although I closed mine all the way through it.. ..zz..
