whilst I wish no ill on any player I think the who Brazil brilliant thing is way over the top, there not he Brazil of the early 70's and haven't been since then. although Neymar is obviously a good player he hasn't exactly set the world cup alight, in saying that it sounds quite a nasty injury and wish him well. |

Nothing changes really. Brazil are still the model footballing nation & I just love to watch them, the treatment of their players has over the years been appalling, remembering mostly the destruction of Pele that went on over time, now an awful lunge into the back has destroyed a young lads world cup, a brilliant young man. Awful, the referee should never referee again, he allowed, maybe even encouraged that type of behaviour in the game, two early yellows would mean Neymar would probably still be able to delight us. If referees cannot protect skilled players from thugs then the game has no hope. On a more positive note, other things don't change either. I'm old enough to have ringing in my ears the 'Brazil are not the side they were in xxxx', whilst I watch Brazil win games, play their extraordinary brand of football, and continually set and reset the benchmark for how the game should be played. Players come and go, managers come and go, world cups come and go.....but Brazil manage to maintain their standard, certainly they have through the whole of my long lifetime. Oh that English football was anything close to that. |

The brazil team that started last night there was only 1 player who plays his football in brazil...............Fred I agree the samba stars from the 70s-80s were a joy to watch unlike the stars of today,i think football is not only damaged in england with the amount of foreign players but worldwide with brazil just another example with all their stars playing abroad Edited by bluenosebryan, Jul 5 2014, 09:14 AM.

After watching them in every game during this World Cup, my former love for the Brazil way of playing the game has evaporated somewhat It was a careless challenge by the Colombian player but I don't think the intent was there to inflict a serious injury, he was going for a high ball and he did at least apologise for the challenge on Neymar immediately afterwards However Brazil had committed 31 fouls to Columbia's 23 and James Rodriquez (one of the most exciting players of this World Cup) was himself on the receiving end of some Brazilian butchery the other night.....the referee was absolutely terrible and failed to take command of the game....he was extremely weak Brazil have certainly declined in status since they last won a World Cup 12 years ago and even that team was a pale shadow of the 1970 and 1982 teams From the four semi finalists in 2014 they are by far the worse......and the luckiest Here's what at least 4 BBC pundits think of their style....all are more or less in agreement http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/28172053 If any team in the world play the game they way it should be played....i.e the concept of total football.....then it has to be Holland , I'd like them to win the trophy this time but they have a huge hurdle in Argentina who are hitting a good patch at the very right time and possess the best player on the planet right now ....plus even if they do win, they could face a very good German side and the Dutch consider the Germans to be one of their bogey sides.....in the big tournaments that is usually the case KRO Edited by PartisanBCFC, Jul 6 2014, 07:47 AM.

I know where you're coming from Partisan, but for me they are no different than they used to be. It's easy to forget the time in the past when pudits have said Brazil played poorly, but they always have the ability to outperform all pundits thoughts on them, and they always achieve very well, and play attractive football. On the fouling, they have always been able to mix it as well, they are nobody's mugs. They change their style of play dependant on who they are playing, being able to play clean attractive football but also being able to get stuck in if their opponents are doing teh same. The latter usually being the case as their opponents always feel up against it and feel unable to win fairly. You may be right on the number of fouls, I would not dispute their ability to mix it, as I say, but look at the bottom line. How many injuries were there that affected that game, how many players have been taken out of the world cup, how many careers have been destroyed by Brazil compared to their opponents. I think you'll find that in fact Brazil are a far cleaner footballing nation than their opponents. Oh and I disagree on the incident that took Neymar out, one media description Cynical: With the ball nowhere near Zuniga smashed his knee into the lower part of Neymar's back, an of course there was an on field apology, that is standard get out of jail tactics in the cynical game of football these days, but here is Zuniga's considered, post match comment on the matter “It was a normal move” he said. “I never meant to hurt a player. I was on the field, playing for the shirt from my country, not without the intent to injure. I was just defending my shirt.” No apology there, only self protection. Now for me the only thing that normalises that tackle is that there are so many cheat using illegal physical methods these days, but it was not a normal footballing move, not in my book. 1. No intent to get the ball 2. Deliberate jump into Neymar's back not directed at the ball at all. 3. The intent appeared to be to take Neymar out. Now, just as Suarez was punished for what was mild compared, Zuniga should have a lengthy ban from the game for a far worse incident. |

He won't receive any further disciplinary action from FIFA as the ref had seen the incident and played an advantage http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/28198309 In all honesty though I feel the tournament has been played in a fairly sporting manner , it's been one of the best World Cups of recent years although it has to be said that when brutality rises to the surface the Latin Americans are very often the worse culprits Good write here from The Independent who appear to blame FIFA ....personally I just believe a lot of referees are weak and some are not familiar with the actual rules of the game or even guidelines from their own masters , FIFA ......The World Cup Final four years ago was a pretty ugly affair but Howard Webb of England tried hard to keep the game following and with an 11 v 11 ......Yet he was lambasted for it We surely don't want to see 5 red cards and 15 yellows in every game do we ? It's still a man's game http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/worldcup/neymar-out-of-world-cup-2014-fifa-to-blame-for-thuggery-which-flattened-brazil-forward-9588097.html Edited by PartisanBCFC, Jul 7 2014, 08:43 PM.

I agree with that Partisan, FIFA are not up to the task of dealing with today's football, neither are the FA btw. I agree as well, it was for me blindingly obvious that two early yellow cards woudl have sorted that game out, but whether directed to do so or not, the referee was too weak to stamp authority on the game. |

Totally agree with PArtisan Too big a can of worms here for FIFA though, if they're going to investigate this challenge purely because Neymar was unfortunate to damage his vertebrae they certainly need to investigate the clear targeting by Brazil of the almost Blues striker (tongue in cheek i assure you) James Rodriguez. situation and circumstance, only due to his athleticism did he escape that match without serious injury. Challenges raining in on him with clear intent to injure whereas in my opinion of injuring him, Zuniga was clumsy and careless but i don't think there was even close to the same level of malice and cynicism the Brazilians adopted.
