I know few on here use Macs, I assume you also have PC experience. Would you mind sharing your views of the pro's and con's of the two. I am just coming up to decision time, and need some constructive feedback please. |

PC - Very much a commodity product, some very good hardware around for a reasonable price, you can mix and match things like monitors, graphics cards etc. You don't need the latest stuff to get a very good platform. Loads of software available, more and more of it actually free e.g. Open Ofice. You'll be instantly familiar with Windows, and most new PCs around today will be able to run Vista (if it ever turns up) without any problems. Macs - Some people think that they are overpriced for what you get, but this is because Apple control everything about the platform. There is very much a pro / consumer split in the Apple range, and the consumer models tend to be not as upgradeable as a Windows PC - for example, changing a graphics card. Not as much software available as for a Windows PC, but this depends on what software you actually need. The iLife suite that comes with all new Macs is very highly regarded for most consumer tasks. Apple have just made the switch to Intel processors, and there have been a few teething issues with the new models, particularly regarding how much heat the laptop models generate. However, Apple support is very good. The Mac operating system is thought of as having the best eye candy around at the moment, but Vista will have a lot of similar stuff in it. It's like buying a car, people can give you opinions and experience, but only you can make the choice. I'd get down to the Apple Store in the Bullring and check a few Macs out. But iMacs rule **thumbup |

Thanks Shrops, good overview. Just what I needed. See, your final statement is what is getting to me, so many people who have used Macs, swear by them, I am just a bit nervous of he leap. I have used a succession of four Dell's at home over the past 11 years, running two on network now, been delighted with their performance, reliability, support and in thje main, software. Maybe I'm just in need of a change. Any other views would be welcome. |

Forgot - You can actually install Windows onto an Intel Mac and set it up for dual boot. There are a couple of utilities around that let you do this - Boot Camp, for example |

I was actually going to congratulate you for not mentioning that, and then you go and make another reply  It makes me laugh that the many Mac owners go on about how good a Mac is compared with a Windows PC for ages and ages, and then at the end squeeze in 'you can run Windows if you get bootcamp aswell'. What's the point? Why not just stick with a regular easy upgradeable pc if all you're going to do on a mac is run windows? |
