Can't believe it..... it's the last one tonight, not only that but they are showing the last one on over on BBC2!!

Veteran television presenter Jimmy Savile will don a gold track suit on Sunday for the final edition of "Top Of The Pops", the music chart show that has run for over 42 years.

A victim of the advent both of MTV and the Internet, the program airs for the last time at 7 p.m. local time on BBC2, making it number 2,204 in the series.

It will include clips of some of the highlights of the show, which has become a British institution despite slipping from cool to kitsch in recent years.

Plummeting ratings sounded the death knell for the weekly televised chart countdown, which used to be watched by more than 15 million people but has seen its audience slide to just over one million.

A BBC spokeswoman said Savile, the show's first host in 1964, will round off the episode with the words: "Don't forget it's number one, it's still Top of the Pops," a play on his signature catchphrase.

He will be joined by some of the other best-known presenters, including Tony Blackburn, Janice Long, Mike Read, Pat Sharp, Reggie Yates and Edith Bowman.

More than 100 fans took part in the recording of the final episode, which took place late on Wednesday. Some dressed as their favourite pop stars, including Elvis Presley and the members of supergroup ABBA.

Top of the Pops first transmitted live from a converted church in Dickinson Road, Manchester, on New Year's Day, 1964, on BBC 1.

The Rolling Stones were the first band to perform, singing "I Wanna Be Your Man" and the full lineup included Dusty Springfield, The Dave Clark Five, The Hollies, The Swinging Blue Jeans, Cliff Richard & The Shadows and Freddie & The Dreamers.

The first Number One on Top of the Pops was The Beatles with "I Wanna Hold Your Hand"

you got a point there...... also a good point before about there being no Beatles, I didn't watch it all...recorded it. Was there any Jam??? wasn't they the first group to perform both the A side and the B side Going underground/Dreams of Children live on the program?

i won't shed a tear, it''s been years since i las watched it

simply because all they played was either

one hit wonder indy rock band
girly mainstream RnB
cheesy pop music
and the odd oversampled dance track

it practically killed itself, it wasnt the Internet and MTV

plus, as soon as people were old enough to realise the artists were miming, they switched off..

Me too

TOTP will always be a 70's memory for me..........remember all those Christmas specials with Mud,Gary Glitter,Slade etc..........I rarely missed one and it usually broadcast right before the Queen's message just as we were tucking into the turkey and mince pies ............""Aaaaaaahhh Dem Days But Good""

Actually the hosts (who were mainly Radio One DJ's) became household names back then.......DLT,Johnny Walker (from Brum if I recall),Jimmy Saville (a truly great man who did so much charity work and helped the needy),Mike Read,Kenny Everett etc

I met Noel Edmunds on holiday in Corfu.........the women were all over him ....he was a character

But the one who got right up my nose was undoubtedly.......Tony Blackburn....ironically he was one of the Beebs biggest earners back in those days ....I just couldn't stand the guy

A truly sad weirdo, imo (did you ever see the Louis Theroux documentary ?). Only celebrity has kept him from being a care in the community case.

I never liked any of the TOTP presenters, except for john peel & kid jensen. Mostly middle-aged pop star wannabees trying to look trendy - Mike Reid, DLT, they were the real Smashie & Nicey.

Agree with that spudhead.

Compare to Match of the Day : both had their heyday in the 70s and both were affected by the internet and the explosion in tv & radio channels...

MOTD adapted and is still relevant today. TOTP could have been the music equivalent of motd, but the bbc never had the wit to do it.

Agree with Mr P about Jimmy Saville, I shudder to think what will come out when his posthumous biographies are published.

I noticed on the last TOTP that The Tweenies, St Winifred's School, Crazy Frog and a succession of one hit wonders were lauded but the whole punk movement failed to get a mention.

The Old Grey Whistle Test was the top popular music programme of all time, with only The Tube as anything like a rival. TOTP will be forgotton long before these two shows fade from the memory.

Goodbye and good riddance.

agree with mr p - of course, saville wasn't the only weird one, what about that jonathan king fella?
it may well have been more cheesy than gary glitters 4skin but i guess thats what its was supposed to be; they had the "music for adults" on the old gray whistle test which was the forerunner to mtv formats i suppose...
