I was perusing through my collection of 'Beano' comics from the 80's that i've been made to incinerate....and i came across a line from the bash street kids where Plug told Spotty that he was a "radio ham"

Now, the term "Radio ham" was once a common term for people who got hooked on the trend of CB Radio talk in the late 70's? much like MSN messenger is today? I don't suppose for one moment that there are any "radio hams" left?

In 50 years time the term "radio ham" will be lost forever, probably along with descriptive terms such as "latch key kid", "pinball wizard" and "that LP is ace"

My ten year old daughter tells me that i am "sick" which apparently means that i am "dark" which also means that i am "cool"? God knows? All the phrases we grew up with are going, and being replaced with phrases that are alien to us!

Somebody help me!

Probably not worth loads - depending an how many you've got, condition etc - but why not chuck them on ebay ??. You never know....

Better a few quid in your pocket than an incinerated pile of Beano ashes - and you also charge for postage, or ask buyer to collect.....

I've got a pile of Victor comics from the same era in the loft somewhere - loathe to chuck out or burn, so these may find their way onto ebay at some point as well.

Either that or drop them off at a local comic shop - won't get much, but even if it covers a few pints it's better than nothing....

Oh, and I'm fairly sure there are a plenty of "Hams" out there still - google search yourself and be surprised.

C.

Oh Hirsty my sweet prince, it burns my innards to get rid of all these comics? Alas i simply must?

One of them from, September 1985 contains a letter from your almighty holy vicar...that went along the lines of questioning "smiffys" intelligence? It got printed and in return i got two metal badges and a certificate! (sadly long since lost)

I have over 3000 old beano comics stored away that i must get rid of? I can't bear to burn 'minnie the minx' or 'roger the dodger' when in their pomp!

Anyway...sayings such as "you'll get the slipper" are gone forever aren't they?

3000+ !!??. Even at 5p each, that would nett £150+... But with that amount, I'd definately specify "buyer collects"....

I'll bet there's hundreds of old sayings hidden in those Beano pages, and it'd take weeks(+) to dig them all out. Seems such a shame to burn when you could potentially gain some funds towards next seasons ST.. ;)

And did you manage to get to "The Albion" at Sunderland ??. Phil and I did, but only stayed for a quick pint - 15 min walk from ground, and we weren't exactly welcomed with open arms.....

C.

No mate, we couldn't find it? Ended up in a pub called The Colliery or something right outside the ground. It wasn't very nice at all, in fact it was the pits!

It's gone downhill then, it used to be a grate pub.
