Sorry Mr Gold

These two (plus a certain Mr Bob Hatton and a certain Mr Gordon Taylor) were a part of the 'Finest' Blues team in the last 30 odd years or so

It's these days we have to rekindle

I agree, Partisan, that was easily the best forward line we had had since I've been supporting Blues:

Campbell, Francis, Latchford, Hatton and Taylor - Absolute quality.

It was a shame that we couldn't strengthen the rest of the team who, whilst being good players, weren't great players.

Another quality forward line that was one of my favourites was:

Hellawell, Bloomfield, Harris, Leek and Auld.

A bit old fashioned now, I suppose, to have 5 attacking players like that, but I wish we could do it now.

Both of those attacks were fun to watch.

Francis Latchford Hatton Burns etc very good team but the manager helped Freddie Goodwin, he was'nt a high profile man, quite person BUT got on with the job & did NOT make any excusses(say no more).
wish we had that kind of person(s) at BCFC now.

I remember vividly the sale of Bob Latchford to Everton & of TF to Forest but I can't remember a thing about the sale of Bob Hatton. I know that we sold him to Blackpool for £60,000 in 1976, but does anybody know why we let him go ? He was only 29 & went on to score lots of goals after we sold him (I think that he might have been the record goalscorer in the Football League one season).

He may have been only 29, but his lack of pace was beginning to show and he
was dropped from the team.
I remember him doing will for Luton in the old Div 2 in the late 70's.

Takes you back that doesn't it - Just the way the teams were set up brings it back

TF today would be called a forward plain and simplebut when he started he was called at Inside Half

Taxes the memory now but I seem to recall the line ups went like this

Goalkeeper
Right Back Left Back

Right Half Centre Half Left Half

Outside Right Inside Left Inside Right Outside Left

Centre Forward

5 Players going forward - But the wingers had to work like mad helping the defence.

The line up is smack on and when i saw a picture of Francis and Latchford yesterday on the Blues site it made the old hairs stand up on the back of the neck to think about that forward line,

You never know with Mcsheff and Bendtner (if signed) and Jerome who knows in a few years (if they stay) we could be seeing something similar, would love to see a winger down here as fast as Taylor, used to remember sitting in the paddock and watching him zoom towards the Tilton and i used to have to stand up cos all the adults were and it used to really hack me off i missed the end of many a run, so before you stand up you adults, think about the bloody kids.

The biggest mistake was having to sell Bob Latchford to get Howard Kendall. If we'd just pushed the boat out and bought Kendall for cash and kept Latchford we'd have had a great side, imagine

Campbell...............................Kendall.......................................Taylor

PTTS

You mean you wouldn't have signed 'Archie Styles' as well ?? ...he was also in the Bob Latchford exchange package with Kendall

Well,I suppose you have a point :ph43r: :ph43r:

Left back was usually always a STRONG position when you look at past BCFC sides

Colin Green,Malcolm Page,Bobby Thomson,Stevie Bryant,Mark Dennis,Brian 'Harry' Roberts,Pat Van Den Hauwe,John Frain,Martin Grainger

I deliberately missed out Alberto Tarantini because he was 10 years ahead of us

Strangely enough my fave player at the time (at the end of Francis's reign) was our very own Keith Berschin. Everyone else liked TF, I just used to love the way Keith ised to dive between players legs to head the ball home (well that's my recollection of him anyway).
