Matthew Upson will make his long-awaited comeback from injury for Birmingham's reserves on Monday evening.

England cap Upson has missed the last seven months of action due to an Achilles injury, and the 27-year-old begins his playing return against Nottingham Forest.

The 27-year-old, who had already missed much of the last campaign through injury, broke down in the warm-up prior to April's Premiership clash at arston viler in April.

Blues boss Steve Bruce is delighted at the imminent return of Upson.

"It will be nice to have him back. He's an England international and to have him in the side will be like welcoming a new signing into the squad," said Bruce.

From SS.co.uk

He had to use the new signing line didnt he

Hes probably injured another knee, that guy seems to have more knees than most people to injure.

I look forward to mattys return. I hope everything goes well for him tonight. I do fear that we may only have him untill January though as he wasnt all too keen to sign a contract.

I've said it before, the time it takes for our players to become fully match fit after a long injury lay off, I'd say Upson won't be ready until the start of next season ;)

Down there tonight at last, been trying to get to a reserve game for ages. Nice one to get to as well with Matty making some appearance. Tyson back from injury for Forest too. Going with Forest fan. Should be a good night.

From the Blues' site.....

BLUES RESERVES 1 FOREST RESERVES 2

Blues Reserves' unbeaten start to the season came to an end at Damson Lane on Monday evening, as Keith Bertschin's side went down 2-1 to Nottingham Forest.

The major positive for Blues was seeing Matthew Upson complete his first competitive outing, since rupturing his Achilles tendon seven months ago.

The centre half played an hour of the game, before being substituted.

Forest took the lead through a deflected Julian Bennett effort with just eight minutes on the clock.

Bertschin's side then pulled the scores level just after the hour mark with a James McPike header, before the visitors' sealed the victory with a goal from Jon Paul Pittman on 71 minutes.

Pretty good game, our attack was pretty inexperienced, but the defence wwas oK. Some reserves need to get a move on if they are going to make the first team. Some who have been around for a time did not show well tonight. Asa Hall, Jamie Price had pretty poor games. McPike looked dangerous, but he's pretty young. Scott Dobie, Padula and Tyson played well for Forest. They were the better outfit in a top of the table tussle. They take over top spto from us.

Thanks for that Wisel,
thats been my beef for years about the reserves, they should be busting a gut to show the manager that they are ready for first team action but it always seems laid back,i know its hard to get motivated in front of a few hundred but thats what these lads have to do,when people are calling for the kids to play they need to remember the first team manager sees what you decribed as well,
nice to see Upson back ,hope they dont rush him now ,they can afford at the moment to give him time to get match fit, have you seen anything of Darren Campion yet,my tip for a big future in football.

Chicken and Egg situation.

Difficult nigh on impossible to get motivated when good play and form is over looked by the manager as first team potential. Which could mean that the players in thhe reserves see little point in trying to impress the manager. If ther was a good history of reserves (youth) breaking through then the attitude might be different. Kilkenny, Sadler and Doyle being thhe only ones of the top of my head who have mmade it through (apologies if theres more, it's early in the morning and the eyes are still trying to focus!)

but you still try your best ,
there are 90 odd other teams to impress,
the pressure nowadays is worse ,the standard needed is very high,
thats why clubs like blues are raiding clubs like arsenal because the better young players will always go to the bigger clubs first,
i still think there is nothing like enough being done at grassroots level to help these young footballers,
you only have to look at the condition of the parks pitches on a sunday ,they are a disgrace ,
but dont get me started on that one.
