Newcastle Game; a real puzzler

How are we going to play this? On the one hand, the prospect of a cup run, and being live on BBC1 makes me want Blues to put out the first 11.

On the other, given our already small squad plus injuries, we don't want to damage our £40million promotion bid hopes; maybe field N'Gotty, Gray Tebily Kilkenny Oji etc.

But then again (3 hands!) we are on BBC1 and we want our best team out there fighting to do us proud.

What do you think?

I think Bruce has already confirmed he will play a strong team, plus i want any new signings to be started so they can get some match practise, but it wont happen. He will save them for a big match like Stoke at home...

What £40 million promotion hopes?

It was £50 million a couple of days ago - what happened ?

Bruce says the FA Cup 3rd round is special to him. So good.

Let us at least be the last Championship team fighting with dignity in the bloody cup.
We have the biggest squad, possibly the best in the Championship.

Anyone who wants to see Cardiff, WBA & Norwich, Derby go further than us is not a proper supporter

We must play to win, they were there for the taking and I'm sure we can beat them if we have 11 players on the pitch. I'd be disappointed if we just simply rolled over for this poor Newcastle side.

Only proper supporters will be sitting in their armchairs wanting us to win.
The rest - the untrue blues - will want us to lose. And use the excuse about the league. They're only happy when we lose that lot.

We should be looking forward to cup matches, not hoping to be dumped out at the first opportunity. They should be the days that the fans and the team to go out and enjoy.

Why does it seem so totally out of the question that we can't put a good cup run together and win the league?

I don't blame Bruce one bit for playing a strong side on Sat, fair play to him, he could have rested Bendtner and McSheffrey but he did'nt.

Can you imagine Bruce telling those two in particular that he's going to drop them against our biggest opponents so far this season? I'm sure they would'nt be too happy.

It backfired a bit with the injuries, which is unfortunate but they are part and parcel of the game. And I don't point the finger at Bruce for it either.

First of all, this a little bit of a rant, please do not treat it as a pro or anti Bruce post.

Arrgghhh, that post almost has me gagging, I have never met a Bluenose who wishes defeat upon the team, when Bruce was on the Virge of the sack, some Blues fans wanted to see the end of him, for the good of the team (in there opinion), and while I never want Blues to lose, I could completely understand some fans just wanted the best for there team, and after watching rubbish for 2 and a half years and price rises to match, who could blame them, you will also find that 99% of the fans who wanted Bruce out, wanted nothing more than to see Bruce turn it around like he currently is, at the time I understood both sides of the argument, I do think the fans gave Bruce, and the team, the kick up the backside they needed, but other posters (yes I have learnt something on this forum) have taught me to think out my opinions before posting rash comments (I don't think this is one), however, the posters that taught me that, I'm sure they will appreciate constructive criticism is always good, even if it sounds harsh, once a Bluenose always a Bluenose. Once again, not a pro or anti Bruce post, please don't take it that way, even if it sounds like one.

What do you think?

As we should have done for the first game.

Rest our "Big Guns" And play fringe players.

We have not a chance in hell of winning the cup, only getting a decent run and a few coppers in the petty cash tin.

There is a BIG pot of gold awaiting the club in the premiership, if we had rested Bendy & Kelly for the first leg we woud not be missing two of our best players for a month or more.

Especially as SB knew the state of our pitch in the home first leg.

any team should play to win - if you pick your best team you improve your chances. anything less is silly imo, winning is a habit and should be continued regardless of what competition you're in... ;)

As Brucie still has dreams of the Newcastle job I would not be at all surprised to see him pick a strong team.

Quite right too, imo. If we are not going to try to win the FA cup what's the point of entering the competition in the first place ?

I really do understand your logic, but not in this instance, we have a few payers who are looking tired after xmas & new year it was an ideal game(s) in which to rest a few.

Methinks SB was showing off his management skills to his prospective empoyers

Do you not think that Bentner needed more than one games rest?

I reckon he has been cr&p for the last 3 or 4 games. He is undoubtedly a brilliant prospect for the future (for his club), but certainly lacking the passion needed for a cold, wet winter game at some boggy little outpost in the midlands.

I never want to see any player injured, but it could end up being a major blessing that he has now had a minor injury. He will hopefully now get the rest that he feels he (& probably does) need. He will hopefully come back in 3 or 4 weeks and do what he did in his first 6-8 weeks playing for us - scare the brown stuff out of opposing defences.

He can then go back to Arsenal reserves and watch us play their first team next season :banner:

I certainly do, but giving the kid two weeks break would have been better than having him missing for 4 weeks or more, look what SB says about Kelly

"Kelly has a torn calf," Bruce said. "He is arguably our best athlete. He is fatigued from the games he has played and has done his calf.

Perhaps the calls for a 4 week January mid season break is a good one, it would enable all players to recharcge their batteries and at a time after xmas and new year when the funds are low for us punters and the weather is rubbish too.

I still mantain that in my opinion resting players for a cup game would have been a better option.. and for the replay, still is.

Wonderful thing, hindsight

just because we rest more regular first team players does not mean we dont want to win the game, being a keen football player myself i know for a fact that if i had the chance of playing newcastle in the cup and i was a fringe player with something to prove that i would run my legs off for the cause and would love to be remembered as one of the players that helped us defeat newcastle!

fringe players (mainly the younger ones) are our future and so they want to show what there capable of!

the FA cup is the oldest cup competiton in the world, and one of the most famous? what else can we win? we arent going to win the prem when we go up, so why not have a cup run, plus the winner of our match goes on to play reading, another beatable team, we can have a decent run if we try...do you, the blues supporters to try to lose out on this oppertunity?

Agreed I want us to win the FA Cup, the Carling and FA cups are the only ones reachable to us ATM.

We could at least try, I reckon we would beat Reading as we did last time. Who knows, maybe we will be the first team in Wembley? :D

OK, I have changed my mind, after an enforced weekends rest I think we should now play our strongest team

Gary McSheffrey is far and away our best player (despite Bruce claiming it's Upson), I'd make sure he was fit and firing for the Leicester game on Saturday. He's the only player who is irreplacable for me.

Apart from him, I think we've cover in most other areas and I'd play a reasonably strong side on Wednesday.
