The Times says the Hammers have offered £4 million for the want-away centre-half. Birmingham appear to have increased the valuation of a player who has 18 months left on his contract by £2 million to £8 million.

IMO Bruce should ignore this and reject it if it is true.

as it says in the quote he's valued at 8m so i wouldnt except less than 7

I think we have 2 options

If West Ham are really interested then we should take Danny Gabbidon in a straight swap.....worth a punt

They probably won't part with Gabbidon so ask for 7 million .....they were going to spend 10 million on Ashley Young who was an 'unknown' before this season

Other option ....sell to Tottenham for 3 million plus Callum Davenport....he was awesome on Saturday

No less than £6 million and thhen the board shouldn't be forced into selling at tha price IMO.

Preston turned down a SIX million pound bid from Sheff United for Dave Nugent

They probably really need the money but fair play to them for holding out

Same credit to Watford for not letting Young go lighty

That's how it's done.....if clubs really want a a player that much they will keep coming back....with more money

i am wondering how Preston can keep their player from coming out in the press and saying he wants to move when £6 million has been offered. Goes to show what kind of player they have i guess or agent. If West ham did offere that amount i'd be inclined to sell Matty as long as we sign someone nearly as good, who i don't know. :crying:

Gotta say this and it's all about opinion mind, but Upson is SO over-rated!

if upson played for another club - say the boggies - how much would we want bruce to bid for him ?

i wouldn't pay more than £4m to be honest.... if we get £6m that would be a good deal, imo....

If Nugent s worth #6million the Upson, England international with Oremiership experience, is arguably worth more.

Nugent is an unknown quantity at Premiership level. I'd say Upson is worth more.

If we sell Upson for #6million the we will g=have a 6 million sized hole in our squad. Sullivan wil try to fill it with a player worth half of that and our squad will be decidedly weaker for it.

I wouldn't mind selling Heskey, Pennant, Dunn and Upson if we were filling the holes with players of teh same calibre.

So far we've got some good signings in but we're letting too many good players go to, hopefully, next season's oosition and we'll struggle to kep up.

Nugent is only worth what somebody will pay. Strikers usually cost more than defenders of comparable quality anyway.

The way Upson has played in his last four games he's not worth 6p! Why sell him? Hold him to his contract to help get us up first. And if he does join West Ham, then you can hardly say he left due to ambition (as his agent keeps telling us is a reason he wants to go) as they will be relegated.
Agree that strikers are worth what someone will pay. And they go for more than centre-halves as a rule. Upson has had three serious injuries in his career now, he is approaching 30. I can't see there being a queue of clubs after him, his best days may have gone.

I don't think he'll leave here for West Ham- it would be career suicide the way West Ham are at the moment. More likely he'll either wait for a big club or stay put till the summer.

Its the usual buy or sell policy.

Buy cheap, sell for as much as possible.

You are right tho, think about £5m is correct, as he is approaching 30. But if we can get £8m then so be it.

How much is a replacement going to cost us.....and i mean a decent one?

The Baggies payed £3m for Davies the other season. So a similar lower division player with potential would be about the same price.

How much did Lescot go to Everton for, despite a serious knee injury?

We have to do whats best for Birmingham City. Not for Upson, who does think hes better than what he is.

What about £4m + Yossi Benayoun. IMO a good attacking midfilder with a good engine and an eye for the goal.

I've always beeen impressed with him when i've seen Wet Spam play. **thumbup

Yeah you may be right on Yossi's valuation, but i suppose it depends on how badly they want Uppy. Plus there is the little matter of trying to get Yossi to drop down a division (hopefully only for a few months admittedly!).

Players don't stop at one club for all their career now. Upson, has always given his all, has never badge kissed and has stated for a long time that he won't renew his current contract. He's had a few serious injuries and we've possibly had the best out of him now. Moving on may be the best for both parties and I can't really see what Blues fans have against him.

Upson, has always given his all

< <

his attitude worsened noticably imo after the rumours that liverpool were in for him a couple of seasons ago..

coasted through too many matches on auto-pilot, out-muscled by too many forwards, too many lapses in concentration...

whatever Upson's qualities, I wouldn't count a willingness to die for the cause amongst them..
