I worked with this women very briefly during my time at South Birmingham College!

Hello there,

I used to work at Birmingham and Solihull LSC until I was diagnosed with leukaemia in Dec 2004. I would be really grateful if you could send this email widely as I desperately need more people to join the bone marrow register.

Thanks

Sarah

PLEASE READ AND PLEASE HELP. I NEED A BONE MARROW DONOR!

Hi, my name is Sarah and I am 34. I was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia) on December 22nd, 2004. I was in remission by September 2005, but unfortunately it resurfaced in July 2006. At the moment I am in need of a bone marrow transplant and am unable to find a match as I have a rare tissue type. The only hope for me now is that someone like you comes forward and proves to be a match for my tissue type. Quite simply, it’s a life or death situation. The maximum age is 50 with the British Bone Marrow Registry and 40 with the Anthony Nolan Trust, but, if you are over this age, please still help by passing on this email and enlisting as many people as you can.

Testing your tissue type involves a simple blood test. You will then be placed on the bone marrow register. If you prove to be a match for someone, donating means five days of injections (administered by a nurse at your house) and then roughly two days of being on a stem cell machine to extract your stem cells. It is a relatively painless procedure (I know I have had it done and trust me I am soft!). It is also pretty boring sitting on a whirring machine for two days so take a book!

There are three main ways to join the register:

a) Often the quickest way to join the register is to give blood. During the blood donor session, you should be asked if you want to join the bone marrow register as well but, as this often does not happen, you should ask to join the bone marrow register before your blood is taken and then a small extra sample of blood (which will be analysed for your tissue type) will be taken along with your normal blood donation. Blood donor sessions are on the website: www.blood.co.uk; just type in your post code for the nearest one to you or ring 0845 7 711 711 to find out where your nearest one is.

B) The other way to join the register is to contact the Anthony Nolan Trust. They will send you a form to fill in. You return the form. They then send you a blood sample kit. You then arrange an appointment with your GP or nurse at your local health centre to provide the sample. The sample is then posted back to the Anthony Nolan Trust (and will be analysed there for your tissue type). To contact the Anthony Nolan Trust, ring 020 7284 1234 or go onto their website www.anthonynolan.org.uk and follow the new donor links where you can download the form and fill it in straight away.

c) You can also join the register along with your work colleagues or other people you know. A nurse from the Anthony Nolan Trust can come along to your place of work or to any other facility, including your own home, providing you can arrange for about 25 people to go along. You can contact the Anthony Nolan Trust on 020 7284 1234.

Finally, I would like to express a HUGE thanks for your time in helping. If you have any further questions, please email me on sarahhitchin@btinternet.com.

Please feel free to pass this email on to anyone you can think of. We really need as many people as possible to join the register. You are our only hope.

Thank-you

Sarah

Jassy,

I've just emailed the HR Occupational health peeps at my place of work to see if they can organise a visit for an Anthony Nolan Nurse to come and take samples of those willing to participate.

There are about 300 people working in this building and IF they were to agree there are approx. over 2000 people company wide.

I've no idea what the response will be, but this my best possible chance of reaching the greatest amount of potential donors in one go.

Been on the register for about 15 years.

I'm obviously not a match.

Pooh!

I wanted to do this a few years ago but when I looked into it I found that I was too old. :( Having now read Jassy's post, I realise I must have looked at just the Anthony Nolan site which is more restrictive. Wish I'd realised - I'm now too old for the British Bone Marrow Registry as well.

I'll spread the word though. **thumbup

jassy, it's the biggest needle you've ever seen and it hurts like a beeeatch!!
as they ram it straight down to your bone marrow anaesthetic isn't used, and you feel the tip of the needle grating against the bone before it finally shatters a small piece to gain entry. instead of needle though, i'd describe it as a small harpoon, normally administered by a large aggressive woman who has a deep hatred of chubby men...... :o
enjoy, and well done - i'd do it but i'm on medication that makes my blood/marrow/organs no use to anyone else.... :(
