How many "stage mothers and stage fathers" want their children signed to a professional club? And one of their loyalty as well ? Signing forms does not lose your child, but it keeps them off the streets from the age of 8-16. And children will not develop football skills at 15 or 16, forget it please. IMO it is part of the culture of the society, In Holland, where children are associated with their local clubs from 1str grade (5 years old) for PE and input, they can sign associate forms from 9 years old and can be given another breathtaking view of life and chances through local football clubs. They don't mess with drugs, they don't mess around on street corners, they have healthy bodies and self respect. Whats wrong? And at what age did Alex sign on ? |

i agree with bruce that there is no need for 8 year olds to be at academys, but that is the way football has gone these days. i think the youngest age for an academy side should be 10. |

IMO I have to agree with Steve Bruce, heres a question for you, how many players have you seen in the same England schoolboys team make it to Professional first team football? I'll tell you - less than 1 in 12, so don't get on his or the boards back about not investing in Academy football or looking for short term returns, professional football clubs are run by VERY successful businessmen - don't you think they know a bit more about making a good return on investments than we do? |

Dunno if it's been said as I only read 1st page - but look at the best footballers in the world, ie. the Brazilians. They don't even play football proper until in their teens, it's all this futsal stuff in a gym with a cloth ball, to build individual skills before learning the trade. Their 8yr olds are all on the beach playing keepie uppie, not being signed up by Santos and Belo Horizonte. |

Its quite clear that Bruce doesnt give youth a chance, if you cast your minds back to the season he took over. Dont suppose any of you remember a £4.5m + Andrew Johnson for Clinton Morrison deal?? Clearly Saw Bruce coming!! |

i agree - kids should be nurtured and gently educated at that age, possibly up until about 12 or 13. their bones/muscles/ligaments are very fragile and a serious knock at that age could have career-long repercussions. also, putting young kids into competitive situations is generally counter-productive and is actually a hindrance to open learning. they shouldn't be competitive at that age, winning means nothing then really.... on the wider subject of academies, a mate of mine was approached to let his 9 year old train with nottingham forest, and he's one of about 1000 on their books - the chances of succeeding are virtually nil but the pressure on them is great and unrealistic imo... |

The sad truth is that apart from the pole in goal & pearce who probably have only an outside chance their isn't a lot else coming through. Very occasionaly you will get a gem like sturridge at 8 yrs old who will come all the way through the system but generally true potential doesen't show till the lads are more phisically developed at 14+so expect to see blues bringing in more lads from other clubs & abroad to supplement the 1 or 2 of good local lads. viler have been doing it for years which is why they produce several for the first team squad, the bottom line is you need to spend more money on the academy over to the owners the ball is in their court . |

Resorting to personal abuse is a sign of a very weak argument. Being good at running one sort of business doesn't automatically mean that they are good at running a football club. I would be more than happy to debate the record of the current owners with you. Being owned for 14 years by guys worth £1billion, we could have expected Blues to have made real progress in that time but what happened is : - no trophies - not a sniff at qualifying for Europe - more time spent out of the top flight than in any other 14 year period in our history - ground redevelopment outpaced by the likes of Reading, Bolton, Coventry, Man City, Sunderland, etc, etc - fan base eroded - we now have a smaller fan base than Leicester, Norwich or Ipswich - ST prices consistently amongst the highest in our division - no significant investment in infrastructure (e.g. youth academy) I appreciate that some folks have a different view about the board, but let's look past the media-friendly charm of DG & KB and look at their record. |

i agree, personal abuse is unwanted and unecessary however 1/ name any club outside the top 5 who've won trophies recently 2/ sniff at europe when we should have beaten liverpool - if only refs knew aj then like they know him now... 3/ true 4/ figures to prove that please 5/ figures to prove that please 6/ figures to prove that please, with like-for-like comparisons otherwise you get my vote for chairman... |

Even if I find time to get hold of the relevant stats I doubt that it will make any difference; those who have swallowed the DG/KB spin will still think that the board "are the best thing that ever happened". I take your point that the big 5 have monopolised the trophies recently, but even so the likes of Vile, Leicester, Blackburn, Everton, Spurs and Boro have won trophies since our current owners took over. In addition the likes of West Ham, Bolton, Ipswich, Norwich, Forest and QPR have finished in UEFA places during that period. Attendences are the acid test of the fanbase. We are top of the league with gates of around 21k, Norwich have close to 25k average despite being 16th. Likewise, Leicester, Ipswich and Sheff Wed (all mid-table or worse) have bigger gates than us. That's what 14 years of DS/DG has done for us. |

you're welcome... if you feel that is a good return for 14 years of billionaire ownership... i guess that we probably just have different levels of ambition for the blues... |

i resent the implication you want blues to do well and i don't - just because we MAY differ in our views of certain issues doesn't mean i have no ambition for the club. i expect i've put in as much time/money/effort that you have over the years at least but would never assume i'm a better fan than you..... snidey reply imo < < |

I reckon the kids are better off playing for community run boys clubs till they are about 14-16, you often find there training is actually just as good if not better than a lot of Club academy's including our own, as for the parents I know from personal experience there just happy for the peace and quite, as well as knowing there kids are safe and having fun. |

touchy! nothing to do with who's a better fan... some fans would be happy even we spent the next ten years in league one, others won't be happy until we win the champions league.... most of us are somewhere in between... it doesn't make one better than the other... i suspect that you are happier with our achievements (?) over the last 14 years than i am but i never said that you had NO ambition for the club... |

not very realistic how realistic is it for owners worth £1,000,000,000 to build up the fanbase through - building loyalty amongst existing fans - marketing the club effectively to new fans - community initiatives - making football affordable for families ... so that after 14 years we have a bigger fanbase than Norwich ? |
