I dont like it when a team is just all battle and no skill. I like my DM to be a battler which is why for me DJ is immense but thats another argument!! The point i'm getting to is that today we needed a team of battlers.......and eventually we got it. The pitch was attrocious today, mainly due to the weather and so to judge players on performance such as passing etc would be an injustice. Neither team could play football, it was simply down to a scrap, and the nature of the goal showed it.

First half i thought we were poor. We just didnt look up for it and seemed to be going through the motions on a hard afternoon. All credit to Brucie though, second half we looked much more up for it. Seems a rocket up the back side was used on a few at half time. In the end, a great win against team who impressed me a lot against Preston and solid defensive performance.

Player Ratings:

Doyle 8 - Not an awful lot to do but commanded area well, couple of decent saves, one outstanding save.
Kelly 8 - Did well. Good reading of game on a number of occasions and didnt try to overplay in bad weather.
Taylor 6 - Did ok. Learnt his lesson early on after trying to be too clever at start on one occasion.
N'Gotty 9 - MOTM Superb performance today. Read game exceptionally. Made things look easy
Sadler 7 - Again made sure he did the basics on poor pitch. Solid
McSheff 5 - Just not his conditions at all. Not effective at all today
Clemence 6 - Pretty average game. Solid enough in the middle of the park.
Muamba 5 - Did his usual today. Great at breaking up play but pointless if he is just going to give it back to them!
Larsson 5 - Would have been 4 but for goal. Ineffective and didnt seem interested in today's weather
Vine 7 - Worked his socks off, some good runs.
Bendtner 5 - Again conditions not to his liking being a flair player. Lazy at times.

Subs:

Nafti 6 - Not an awful lot of time to show himself. Didnt break up play as well as Muamba but didnt give it away
Jerome 7 - Caused problems as soon as he came on. Should have been on earlier, not enough time for real impact.

Credit to the referee today. Think it was 2 or 3 bookings and a fairly flowing game in treacherous conditions. Largely went unnoticed which is always a sign of a good referee. Great performance from him today, fair play. Very impressed.

Agree to a point, I thought Mcsheff was terrible in the first half due to coming inside all the time and getting in vine's way.Muamba was a 6 for me as he improved in the second half and Larrson must get 6 or 7 cause he scored the goal.
The pitch was terrible holding all that rain, what is wrong with the drainage and I think we were lucky the match atayed on only due to telly.
One thing that got me was the lack of groundspeople at half time, only 4 to try to do something is stupid.I think we needed 40 today.

To me, the new pitch looks no better than the old one, and it may well be slightly worse. But I think the conditions did us a favour today because we would have been more used to the poor surface

Good performance from the lads, I'm not sure why Dave Jones is saying that Cardiff dominated the whole game :s

Player ratings -

Doyle - 7 - Some good saves, a few heart-stoppers aswell. Brilliant save from the volley.

Kelly - 8 - Really good performance, looked very good going forward and at the back. Definately deserves his place at RB.

N'Gotty - 9 - Fantastic performance, cleared up everything and seemed to nick away their attacks all the time.

Taylor - 8 - Good game, a lot of good defensive covering. One moment where he almost gave it to their player in a back pass.

Sadler - 7 - Decent defensively. Tended to mis-time his hoofs. Well played for the goal.

Larsson - 7 - Had an OK game, wasn't in the game all that much. Well taken goal.

Muamba - 7 - Was poor in the first half, but more than redeemed himself in the second. Excellent range of tackles and was unlucky not to get a goal.

Clemence - 7 - Had a good game, didn't do anything out of this world, but relieved pressure in the dying minutes. Made too many dodgy passes back to Doyle.

McSheffery - 7 - Wasn't in the game much, but his deliveries were good as usual. Looked a bit tired towards the end.

Bendtner - 7 - Didn't create much, but showed a lot more running. Had a small hand in the goal. Did some good defensive headers.

Vine - 8 - Strong showing, looked the most lively of the attackers. Some good range of passing and skills. Unlucky not to have an assist.

Subs -

Jerome - 6 - Not much time to impress, but made the most of it with his pace. Frightened their defenders. Perhaps should have scored.

Nafti - 6 - Came on and broke up play towards the end. Lovely bit of skill when he juggled the ball over a player's head.

Yep, I would agree with that.

A bit better performance than some of late and the team seemed reasonably balanced. Only real down side was another poor start to a game. Someone will take advantage if we don't start stronger.

6 and 6 in my opinion.

Taylor for their penalty appeal just stood there, shouldve mopped it up, and the one where he just left the free-kick and just went wide.

My only beef with today's performance

Muamba, never got in the game, gave away the ball. Nafti came on, looked stronger, quicker and slid some nice balls across the field.

Bendtner, lazy. Look at the impact Jerome had the second the got on the field.

Sadler, passing back. He's got a free run down the wing but he's too scared to go for it. The reason why we don't get forward enough is because he keeps seeing players infront of him and he keeps passing back. Defensively he's sound, he just needs to sort it out. I wouldn't replace him.

I think Nafti and Jerome deserve starts next week, with Bendtner being dropped.

I may be wrong is not the people that laid the pitch the same that Chelsea are apparently suing for allegedly doing theirs badly.

I don't thinkwe have heard the end of the pitch.

Dave Jones commnets about not grazing his horses on it may be true, but did he not use it for some of his donkeys?

Today wasn't a day for football.

If ever we needed to dig in and grind out a result it was today and our players rose to the challenge. More than happy with 1-0 win. 2 clean sheets in a row at home, 2 wins, top of the pile.

As for the pitch, it has always drained well in the past. Think it was cowboys who relaid it but it is no way near as bad as the old pitch. Even today, with all the lying water, it didn't cut up.

The drainage needs sorting out but otherwise, the pitch is holding up well. Needs to be greatly improved for next season no matter what division we're in.

Didn't I hear this is a temporary surfance and it will be relaid in the summer properly?

My views from the screen, couldn't go today because of work but have got my WBA tickets.

Doyle...8 (would have been 7 but for that save, still looks a little unsteady at times, hopefully it's because of his age>)

Sadler...6 (terrorised by their winger and didn't get forward as much as he has done in the past)

N'Gotty...8 (tireless, to quote a legend 'would have headed a jumbo jet away if it was coming toward him'. Only criticism would be that he got pulled all over the place by Chopra and Thompson especially in the first half)

Taylor...7 (was beginning to look really composed in dealing but one scare when he passed it straight to one of their players seemed to unnerve him. Same criticism as N'Gotty too if I'm being overly critical)

Kelly...7 (again did not look comfortable when being ran at, but did get forward a lot)

McSheffery...7 (almost anonymous for the first half but came more and more into it in the second when the otherwise excellent McNaughton began to tire and was being tag teamed with Vine)

Muamba...8 (I wish this guy could shoot, his runs and overall running combatative display ran him close to be ing man of the match today. Very unlucky to be taken off)

Clemence...6 (probably being harsh but no forward vision or passing until late in the game. Put himself about though with usual aplomb and really suits Muamba in the middle. Unlucky with a late shot which forced a great save at the near post.

Larsson...7 (similar to McSheffery. Couldn't really get into the game until late on. Predatory finish at the back stick though a la Jimmy Greaves)

Bendtner...7 (Pulled his finger out today. Tracked back. Tackled. Took people on. Came more and more into it in the second half. Another piece of great skill in taking the ball down on his chest when others would have headed it and a great little flick to set up the goal)

Vine...9 (Man of the match. Worked tirelessly and livened everyone in the stadium up at the beginning of the second half when Blues started to take a bit of a stranglehold on the game. Deserved a goal to cap off his best Blues performance to date)

Bruce...8 (Didn't really get a lot wrong. Was surprised when Muamba came off, but that may have had something to do with him being kicked in the Muamba jewels)

Fans...9 (Looked like a full house today and in great voice too before the game and deafening whn we scored. Kept on singing and was commented on by the pundits. More of the same on friday please. Again if being overly critical, it was disappointing to see people leave in the 81st minute and rows of empty seats at the final whistle)

Pitch...0 (In my opinion, the game shouldn't have gone ahead. It looked like it was getting dangerous with everyone flying in on each other, the Sadler booking being an example. The ball should just not splat when dropped and come to a complete stop when it is being kicked/dribbled. Could have cost us today, but on the same token we could have scored a few more but for the pitch. The Cardiff wingers seemed to adapt to the pitch a lot better than ours did especailly in the first half which is both suprising and disappointing when we train on that pitch and obviously play our matches on it. I'm not sure how much it did rain last night in Birmingham, but it looked like it had monsooned on it. Surely the pitch was covered up over night and that sheer volume of water didn't come down in the hour or so prior to kick off. It is these little things that could decide everything in the Spring so it needs to be sorted pronto)

Here we go for Friday night!!

At KO the pitch was ok. It wa sonly towards the end that it got bogged down and the ball began to stop in the puddles.

Years ago it wouldn't have been in question.

Good to see players in real dirty kits. Nafti and Jerome looked dazzling in their white shorts when they came on! LOL It was like a washing powder advert! LOL

Chelsea have also had there pitch laid twice this season, something to do with drainage since they built the Chelsea village. (apparently!)

:Blues: I think both teams deserve applause for playing on that pitch, it reminded me of playing school foootball many years ago.

On the scoring I fully agree. At last we see Vine doing what he is good at just a goal required to get him in the full swing.

Doyle 7, stop charging out if you're not going to win the ball
Kelly 6 solid, did everything he had to do well but generally not involved much in the game, due to their wide left play being poor, looked forward which was something Sadler wouldn't do
N'gotty 9, amazing bicycle kick clearance ahaha!
Taylor 7, very good at bringing the ball out of defence again, driving us forward, fitness team - WORK ON HIS PACE AND MOBILITY
Sadler 5, defensively solid, too negative going forward, lost the potential for so many dangerous counter attacks
Larsson 5, average, didn't do anything wrong, scrappy due to weather conditions
Muamba 4, poor, lost the ball too much
Clemence 6, good battling, crunching tackles, nice dink over the defender for shot, turned and played a pass backwards and ruined too many attacks, two contrasting sides to his performance, but we'd of missed him if he wasn't there
Mcsheffrey 5, average, didn't see much of the ball, didn't do anything wrong
Vine 9, MOTM skillful, powerful, quick, very hard working, only player on pitch who aggressively took hold of the game until introduction of Nafti and Jerome.
Bendtner 2, lazy waste of space

Nafti 8, powerful, aggressive, quick, charged down Cardiff players and slid perfect balls cross field to the wing - QUICKLY. Part of the reason Jerome was so effective when he was on was due to Nafti. He won the ball, sprayed it to the winger who linked up with Cameron. Clemence and Muamba are too afraid to pass forward, most of the time they end up going back. Has to start next game.

Jerome 8. Pacey, determined, showed a good touch to turn for first shot, unlucky with second, pitch stopped him.

I think we have to play Nafti and CJ, so we can get attacks flowing and score some more goals! Bendtner thinks he has it easy, time for a reality check.

I think Maik Taylor is going to be on the bench for the rest of the season. That single handed save by Doyle saved the day for us, and the rest of the game he looked at least as good as Maik. And his kicking is better too.

Yes hes done well since he came in after taylor had a shocker against southend.

there both pretty similar goalkeepers, both are really good shot-stoppers but are poor at kicking at times and both can look dodgy from crosses from time to time but both are usually pretty good at collecting the ball from crosses, the one advantage doyle has is that he is young and his kicking and collecting crosses should get better from confidence and experience.
i think should we go up i think we could do with investing in a goalkeeper that will do a job for 2/3/4 years while doyle and the polish guy(krysiak) get a bit older and more experienced.
If u look at it you have taylor whos on one side of the spectrum whos getting on a bit and doyle on the other end who is very inexperienced.

For what it's worth heres my ratings:
Doyle.. Did what he had to do, well, in difficult conditions.
Kelly... Solid.
Sadler.. getting better every game.
Taylor...Franz Becanbauer in disguise.
NGotty.. Top Pro.
Clemence. Absolutely F-in awsome. True captain.
Muamba. Young and impressive.
Larrson.. scored!
McSheff.. going through a lean spell. But we love him.
Bendtner..Busy and grafted. for once.
Vine... Quality. Just needs a goal for the full package.
