Birmingham move for Portsmouth striker Cole
tribalfooball.com - March 20, 2007

Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce is making a transfer deadline day bid for Portsmouth striker Andy Cole.
The Sun says England striker Cole, 36, is expected to tie up a loan move today from Portsmouth until the end of the season at least.

Clubs have until tomorrow to sign loan players before all transfers are banned until the summer.

Cole has slipped to fourth choice at Pompey behind Kanu, Lomana LuaLua and Benjani.

Only Tribal Football quoting the Sun, but this would be some move if Bruce could pull it off. I really hope this is true, he is a class act, even at 36.

It's in today's (Wednesday) Sun. Here's the actual article:

Quote:

STEVE BRUCE has made a dramatic late swoop for Andy Cole to boost his Birmingham side’s push for the Premiership.

Former England striker Cole, 36, is expected to tie up a loan move today from Portsmouth until the end of the season at least.

Clubs have until tomorrow to sign loan players before all transfers are banned until the summer.

Cole has slipped to fourth choice at Pompey behind Kanu, Lomana LuaLua and Benjani.

And Bruce is desperate for added firepower to ensure wobbling second-placed Brum make an instant return to the top flight.

They have taken only one point from six and have chronic problems up front with 17-goal hitman Gary McSheffrey currently serving a three-match ban.

Brum have a game in hand on leaders Derby. But Bruce is anxious to add experience to his youthful frontline of Rowan Vine, 24, and Cameron Jerome, 20, for the closing eight games of the campaign.

At £20k a week, Cole is surplus to requirements at Pompey but is the second- top Premiership scorer of all time with 188, behind Alan Shearer on 260.

What a waste of time, we don't need another aging striker on absurd money (Chris Sutton anyone?), as we already have 4 fit strikers! Bruce needs to figure out how to get the best out of those, rather than get someone else in! wtf**

last summer SB said he had learnt from past mistakes.

i see know evidence of this at all, that is of corse it is true.

i think SB should have more faith in the strikers he bought in the summer what sort of message does this send out to them.

good point doc

however

our goalscoring record at the moment aint good enough !

a short term to the end of the season would be fantastic IMO a bit of NOUS and experience to help the others around him

and it wont improve if you play players that have gone off the boil and have been ill will it.

bentdners not scoring so drop him to the bench give jerome a chance to prove what he can do.

he might only be 19 but his age was'nt a problem last season. **thumbup

Martin Taylor is probably our best footballing defender, and from what I have seen this season (every home game) he is probably a better passer of the ball than most midfielders at the club! So how can you have a go at him cos Brucey wants to bring in a forward??? Amazing!

the areas that our forwards are having to go looking for the ball is the main problem, and the time it takes us to bring the ball forward other than down the wings when our full backs can keep the ball in play or we launch it long.

andy cole is a quality striker and yes maybe our younger players can learn from a master Barnetts i do take your point but if he is asked to simply work with our laborious and slow build up play we may not get from him what is required which is goals goals and nothing but goals.

it sends out the message that our scoring record since Christmas has been poor and that we would then have an experienced, proven goal scorer in the wings waiting to come in and take their place if they don't start finding the net pretty sharpish!

Personally, I'd actually have thought we should have enough up top already, but no problem with getting another option in or worry about our existing strikers having a bit more pressure on their place.

webstar the irony is lost on you....

it wasnt a knock at taylor although if i wanted to its easy to list his faults, yes he does have good feet and can pass a ball...but guess what he shouldnt have to :banghead:

no self respecting midfield player would be happy to see a centre back strolling past him with the ball.but ours are more than happy to why is that i wonder ? feed.back

problem as i see it is if we bring in a player on loan for cover or to strenthen the first team then why a striker?

after all if a striker is not scoring then thats of little us to us is it and if he was scoring then he would'nt be available to go out on laon.

and i totally agree that i think we have more than enough firpower up front .
