i havent seen it mentioned, im sure it has but i c it as a big issue, but why oh why does no-one make runs in the box? i noticed when vine had the ball and ran over to the right the same side as bendtner, bendtner was static, shouldnt he sprint into the box? also i think we've seen a few improvements but we need more help in the box from muamba and clemence. as soon as we play the ball out wide, whichever flank, they shud sprint as fast as they can to be there in the box. most the time its one of us versus 5 of them! sorry if its been mentioned. what are your thoughts?

well i dont know if this has any relavance but danns said SB told him not to make runs and to hold his position.

so i guess thats the reason.

but isnt that why danns was bought in in the first place?, to make those runs and score?

Enter Andrew Cole esq. ;)

thats what he does best. he may not run around a lot or chase after players but put him in the box with the ball and 90% of the time the ball ends up in the back of the net.....

I have been saying for a while Vine and Bendtner do not work as a partnership, they are both too similar and neither plays a ‘proper’ strikers role.

We were far better when we had Jerome up front because he at least gave the opposition centre backs something to do. Maybe Cole will play and do that role better, by actually scoring occasionally, but only if we go back to a similar midfield with McSheffrey and Larsson on the wings otherwise we Cole won’t get enough possession to make a difference.

DJ Campbell was always running into the box. Probably why he is the top scorer at close range. Unfortunately he isn't seen as good enough... even though he has the best goals to minutes ratio < <

Campbell seems to be a reasonable goal poacher but his all round play lets him down and he is not able to play to ‘our style’. We often need the forwards to come back and look for the ball otherwise they would never see the dam thing and he just doesn’t have the ability.

I can understand why he doesn’t start more games, equally I could see him being effective if we changed the way we play, but that is unlikely to happen.

Coming on as a sub works because it normally means we are chasing a goal and therefore getting bodies forward and balls in the box, playing to his strengths.

All we have to do now then is get the ball forward now then :-)

To answer the original question - it's called "Brucies Negative Tactics".

Simple concept really - for every player that runs into the box, it's one out of the defence in case the opposition get the ball and attack.

Bruce believes his midfielder should just the opposition and give it to the wingers and they support the strikers.

Clearly Danns was a Sullivan signing because he dosn't fall into the Bruce midfielder key requirements. Similarly Jerome was a Sullivan signing too because he strives on the ball being threaded through to him along the ground to run on to. Koumas did it last season hence all his goals then; Bruce wont let Danns or Kilkenny take the Koumas role.

yeah its obvious to me that bruces teams have always played with to basic centre midfielders whose job is to win the ball back and get it wide to either the full back or winger, which can be ok but its so slow and static at times its not hard at all to defend against.

Especially easy to defend against when you only have one winger capable of / willing to get forward. As we often do on a regular basis.

I think i might of mentioned this before, bendtner never gets in the box, ever! Even if he plays with Jerome, Jerome runs into a wide channel and then looks up and there is nobody there! Rooney is a similar player to Bendtner as in he comes deep to get the ball but he still gets in the bloody box when the ball is out wide!

Dispite Jerome's lack of goals, and touch at times, our 'sytem' worked better with him partnering Bendtner because he at least does make runs into the box. Vine and Bendtner have not been a very good partnership in my view. Individually excellent but too similar to play together.

Therein lies the problem - how many of our plays does our style suit? Jonty? Clem? I imagine that McSheff, Larsson, Jerome, Bentdner, Vine, DJC would all be more effective ina team where there was more than one style of attack, which is hoof and hope.

The flat back 10 that most teams adopt at St Andrews might have something to do with it.

The oposition do have an effect on or game and style of play. If the oposition won't let you play it on the floor there really isn't much choice is there.

I very much doubt that they go out to play 'hoof ball' every game. 2 defenders on our runners all game might slow them down.

Just a guess like.

Totally agree, i am not a fan of Bruce, but he knows where he is at in this division and his tactics seem to be working so far so we cant complain, i just love taking the mick out of him personally :P

It is a fact that every team Blues play will raise their game home and away against us, i mean you can hardly get yourself up to play Hull or Barnsley can you,

If Blues do go up then credit to the man because to get a side like Blues up is doubly difficult than for example Derby , that is why i admire teams like Chelsea and Manure who have to play at all times as if every game is a cup final and still manage to win most games.

Just not so confident in his abilities if Blues do get up

I think there were a lot of reasons why we were relegated. Yes, the manager made mistakes but there are a lot of other factors too.

If I thought Bruce had all the backing possible, all of his first choice signings when he wanted them, all of his first choice players fit and he still got us relegated I'd feel the same as many others.

4 Premiership seasons was a lot more than we all expected way back after beating Norwich in Cardiff.

Everyone has done a great job this season. We no longer bear any resemblance to a Premiership side and to be where we are after decimating our squad last summer is a good achievement.
