Enckelman was however, the culprit for a goal which is seen amongst many to be the one of the most bizarre in the history of the Premiership - as Olof Mellberg took a throw-in to the keeper, Enckelman misjudged the bounce of the ball and it slid under his foot, resulting in a goal for Birmingham City direct from the throw. While there is little doubt that the goal should not have been allowed due to Enckelman not touching the ball, the incident caused great embarrassment to Enckelman. This being a hotly contested local derby, the incident was mired in further controversy when a rival fan charged onto the pitch and approached Enckelman, before making an offensive gesture directly to his face. The fan was soon apprehended and jailed, and Enckelman was praised for his refusal to retaliate.

Whoever wrote that entry reckons that Enckelman didn't touch the ball, obviously an opinion, what's yours?

Mine, his reaction says to me it was a goal.

Don't forget that Wikepdia is written by members of the public and is subject to bias.

Personally, its clear to me that Enckelman didn't touch the ball and the goal shouldn't have stood, however we would have won anyway and Ellery was due to 'even things up' after missing a blatant second penalty in the Worthington Cup Final.

I was just delighted that Ellery chose that game to even it out! :LMAO:

After seeing it in (very) slow motion, I always thought he DIDN'T touch the ball, but it seems to me, because of his reaction, he didn't know the rule, which probably isn't as odd as it sounds because how many times did it happen before? But anyhow, the goal was given (ha, ha!) and it's history now,so who cares what the notoriously unreliable Wikipedia has to say on the subject?

well in the referees, and assistant referees, opinion he touched the ball before it went into the net so a goal was awarded!

he also claimed he didnt know the rules, in his mid 20's and a professional footballer, shocking, doesn't suprise me though. would explain his reaction and helped the ref's confirm their opinion, if he just turned around picked the ball up and threw it to the corner flag i think ellary may have just gave a corner, depending on how big the balls of the assisant were.

all shudda wudda cudda, ifs n buts.

The following paragraph contains an opinion, obviously of that from a Arston Vile fan, regarding the legitimacy of the own goal he scored for Birmingham City. Well done Peter.

I don't think it touched him, and I don't think he knew the rule, especially in the split second he had to react. He'd have never forgiven himself if he hadn't chased it and realised later he could have stopped a goal.

His instinct would have been to chase it rather than think "oops! never mind!". It should actually have been a corner so even if he did know the rules he could say he was trying to prevent that (although you wouldn't hold your head in your hands after giving away a corner!)

True. Given the fact that neither the ref nor the lino could possibly know whether or not he touched it I would have loved to have listened in on their conversation.

Ref : Is that a goal ?

Lino : Erm, I dunno.

Ref : Well, isn't there some rule about it can't go in directly from a throw ?

Lino : Yeah, I think so. I've never seen it before to be honest.

Ref : Did the keeper get a touch ?

Lino : How the **** should I know ?

Ref : Better disallow it then I suppose.

Lino : Alright for you to say. I'll get slaughtered for the rest of the match.

Ref : Tough luck flag boy.

Lino : Ah, c'mon, just give it. I'll give you a massage at half time.

Ref : Goal! (blows whistle, runs back to half way line)
