Steve Bruce will be without four first team players when his side heads to Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Martin Taylor needs an operation on a stomach muscle tear, Damien Johnson is still recovering from a hamstring injury and Rafael Schmitz has an Achilles injury.

Meanwhile Mat Sadler has recovered from his own Achilles problem, but with just one day’s training under his belt, Bruce will not risk him so soon.

“Martin Taylor goes into hospital on Monday morning for an operation on a stomach muscle tear,” said the Blues boss

“He will be out for at least a month.

“He's felt it for about a week and we thought it was better to get it done now.

“Damien Johnson is not fit.

“He did his hamstring against Walsall and although he's making progress, I don't think he's going to be involved for a couple of weeks.

“Mat Sadler only trained on Friday, so he won't be in contention.

“The only other one is Rafael Schmitz who unfortunately hurt his Achilles tendon three days into training with us so that's a concern to us.

“It's inflamed and thickened, but we're hoping by the end of next week he'll do something.

“It was a very similar injury to Sadler.

“Sadler's was okay this week but he wasn't.”

In Taylor and Johnson’s absence and with Stephen Clemence having left to join Leicester, Bruce will need a new captain for Sunday’s game.

“I've decided on the captain for Sunday but I haven't told the player yet,” added Bruce

“It would only be right to tell him first.”

With his experience and his position dead in the centre of the pitch I'd expect Nafti to get the nod. McSheffrey and Forssell don't strike me as being particularly talkative players, both seem more intent on keeping themselves to themselves and concentrating on their own game.

Centre forwards should never be captain.

Nafti will be centre midfield with Muamba IMO.

His pre-season form's been good too so deserves a chance

Bruce has said that Muamba will be eased in to games in the prem, so i think he will start on the bench, Kapo will defo play in center midfield

We'll only play one up front at the Bridge, so we'll have 3 centre midfielders

------------Nafti--------Muamba
Larsson-------------------------McSheffrey
------------------Kapo

I think he will start with Forssell and O'Connor up top, purely my opinion of course, but i think Jerome will come on and his pace may give us an advantage...

Nafti/Jaidi for Captain.

thats if jaidi gets in the first team, bruce would be silly starting a clumsy slow defender when we have djourou and ridgewell
