Gutted. Three points behind one of our rivals already. I bet Spuds don't play as bad as that against us.

Thats what happens when you go out and spend decent money on a striker rather than chase some fat bloke who doesn't want to be here for months.

Sunderland were together as a unit, and I hope that because we've bought a new defence they have some understanding otherwise I think Sunderland could beat us.

That was 1 of the worst games i have ever watched.....

I don't think Berbatov is going to have such a good year this year (I'm going to regret that when he puts a hat-trick past us arn't i??)

I can see us beating Sunderland on Tuesday

This is what's going to happen:

Sunderland Have won.
Birmingham will draw/lose against Chelsea

The media will say that Birmingham are absolute rubbish and certain to go down while Sunderland will cruise through the league because they won and we didn't regardless us playing one of the best teams (if not THE best at home) in the league.

I love the optimism, what is all this pony about relegation rivals?? etc etc

Blues will be comfortable 10th or 11th come next May, this league is not as good as it is bullsh****d up to be, take out the top 4 there is nothing between the rest.

Relegation rivals :LMAO:

Dont believe the hype of the Premier, Blues are more than capable.

I don't see any reason why we can't beat them. Tottenham were really poor especially going forward and Sunderland still only made 1 or 2 chances which they scored from. They were good in defence but they will have more to deal with than what they had to day, surely, we can't be worse than Tottenham were

I agree how can people say that it is the best league in the world when a team going for the top 4 can play that badly in their first game.
Berbatov seemed surprised he got subbed, did he actually do anything??
Sunderland were OK but I was far from impressed with Tottenham especially as everyone has been hyping them up for this season.

I'm still confident for Wednesday and I still think it is a must win for us.

LONDON — Michael Chopra scored in injury time Saturday to give newly promoted Sunderland a 1-0 win over Tottenham in the opening game of the Premier League season.
Chopra, a substitute who used to play for Sunderland's fierce rival Newcastle, shot low into the corner in the third minute of added time to earn the surprise win.

Tottenham did not create any clear chances at the Stadium of Light despite spending almost $80.7 million in the offseason, an amount beaten only by Manchester United and Liverpool, in an effort to improve on two straight fifth-place finishes.

With record signing Darren Bent on the bench until midway through the second half, Tottenham's attack was blunted by a Sunderland team making its return to the Premier League after relegation in 2006.

Sunderland, managed by former Manchester United captain Roy Keane, had the best chances of the match against a Spurs team missing first-choice central defenders Ledley King and Michael Dawson.

"We played extremely well and I thought the better team won," Keane said. "It was down to the players and that desire not to settle for a draw."

Tottenham gets a chance for its first win Wednesday against Everton, which was set to open its season later Saturday at home to Wigan in another of the day's seven games.

Liverpool, which finished third last season, was at arston viler, while former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson took charge of his first Premier League game when Manchester City visited West Ham.

Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce took his new team to face his old one when the Magpies visited Bolton, and Middlesbrough hosted Blackburn, while Derby hosted Portsmouth.

Tottenham spent much of the opening 30 minutes in Sunderland's half, but Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy had the first clear chance of the match in the 38th. Murphy shot from close range on the right of the area but Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson blocked the effort.

Dimitar Berbatov beat offside and goalkeeper Craig Gordon shortly after but he stumbled in the area after a challenge by Dean Whitehead that could have resulted in a penalty kick. Sunderland counterattacked and Dickson Etuhu shot just wide.

With Sunderland enjoying the majority of possession, Tottenham brought on Bent in the second half and withdrew captain Robbie Keane into midfield. That failed to yield a result, so manager Martin Jol replaced Berbatov with Jermain Defoe.

"We've been working defensively," Sunderland defender Nyron Nosworthy said. "The Premier League has top-class players but we restricted them perfectly and that's just what we've been working for."

However, it was Sunderland which finished strongest and Robinson had to dive to slap away a ball that was headed toward goal after hitting Etuhu on the thigh.

Chopra, who joined Sunderland from Cardiff in the offseason, scored when he got to a cross unmarked and shot past Robinson.

Sunderland's next game is Wednesday at Birmingham, which opens its season tomorrow at Chelsea. Manchester United starts its title defense Sunday at home to Reading, while Arsenal hosts Fulham. (AP)

Larsson will definitely play tomorrow....
And why no Parnaby?

The reason Sunderland beat Spurs was the twelth man....
40,000 Sunderland Fans were immense!
We need to get behind our lads from the moment they walk out onto that pitch to warm up....
Then we will frighten the life out of any opposition!
