Don Givens got two, I seem to remember, and I think Kevin Dillon got one. Can't recall the others. I remember I had the names written across the cover of one of my school excercise books! |

Certainly not Gemmill! He didn't come to the club until after trevor Francis was sold, and TF was at the club when they beat the Mancs 5-1. |

thats right - i think he left 2- 3 months after that game. the answers are- alan buckley scored twice, jimmy calderwood scored the other. i have some programmes from that season so i know a lot of stats. dont have the man utd one though so wasent 100% on the goal keeper. |

Yes, he left in Feb 1979, and then the likes of gemmill, Worthington, Todd, etc came in funded by the transfer fee. |

1 - When was the last time Blues were awarded a penalty at Old Trafford v Man United ? 2 -Who was the last Blues player to score at Old Trafford v Man Utd ? 3 - When was our last victory v United at Old Trafford 4 - When was the last time beat them at St Andrews ? 5 - What's our biggest margin of victory over United ? 6 - When was the last time we played Manchester Utd in the FA Cup ? 7 - When was the last time we played them in the League Cup ? Final question....can you name the year Man United were last relegated from the top flight ? OK here goes 1 - October 17th 1981 .......yes,Frankie Worthington scored from the spot....but please correct me if a BCFC player has missed one at OT since then 'cause the question did ask about being awarded a penalty 2 - And the prize goes to Frankie Worthington again....same match believe it or not.......yes,it's been over 26 years but don't forget we haven't played them that often having done our rounds of the lower divisions during the late 80's and 90's 3 - 2nd Januray 1978.....Blues won 2-1....goals from Trevor Francis and Kevin Dillon 4 - Yes,most of you got this ...11th November 1978 ...Birmingham City 5 Man United 1 5 - Very same match... 5-1 ....we also beat them 4-0 on March 12th 1927 ....same margin of victory but lower aggregate 6 - After holding the then mighty Reds and European Cup holders (they were the 1st English club to win it) 2-2 on a memorable rain swept night at SA in front of 52,500 on February 11th 1969....Dave Sugar Robinson (pen) and Malcom Beard scored for us that night in the 5th Round of the FA Cup.....well,OK then I guess they're still 'mighty' considering they are reigning champions once again We got hammered in the replay 6-2 on February 24th 1969 in front of 61,934 at Old Trafford ....Jimmy Greenhoff and Phil Summerill were our scorers.....trivia note ...Blues had battled to the 5th round despite being in the old 2nd Division and in the 4th round we had beaten then high placed 1st Div side Sheffield Wednesday, one of the favourites for the Cup that season, 2-1 in another packed SA replay (51,000 plus) after a 2-2 draw at Hillsborough....the same Sheffield stadium that had been a lucky venue for us up till 1975 anyway 7 - Yes, League Cup (Carling Cup) defeat at home 1-3 20th December 2005 8 - Man United were relegated in 1973-74...but they came straight back as champions joined by Vile and Norwich ....little bit of trivia here but relegated from the top flight that season (75/75) just happened to be one Chelsea FC KRO |

Match report from that great 5-1 victory November 11th, 1978 and Blues' first Division One win of the season really was a FIVE star performance. Blues were having a wretched start to the 1978/79 season. Manager Jim Smith had used 22 players already in the opening three months of the season as the team seemed to lack any real pattern or resilience. So it was hardly surprising that despite it being the middle of November they were yet to register their first victory. With only three points and rooted to the bottom of the table there was no reason to expect anything other than a comfortable away victory when Manchester United came to town. But much to everyone's astonishment, Blues blew mighty United away that day with a performance that made a complete mockery of their league position. At the time the trend of buying foreigners was just beginning to creep into the English game, and Blues had gambled £175,000 on the talents of Alberto Tarantini, one of Argentina's stars in the World Cup finals of the previous summer. Recent signing from Walsall, Alan Buckley, also figured in the game making his home debut. Despite starting well Blues were rocked when United took a 13th minute lead. Welshman Malcolm Page was caught in possession by Lou Macari, the ball ran loose to Joe Jordan and the big striker rounded keeper Neil Freeman to roll the ball into an empty net. Considering the severity of Blues position it was expected that they would just roll over and die, but instead they showed guts and spirit to fight their way back into the game. Therefore, it was no less than they deserved when Kevin Dillon equalised ten minutes later, hammering a fierce right-footed drive past the helpless Roach. Bouyed on by the equaliser Blues were on to score twice more in the next ten minutes. In the 32nd minute Buckley leapt at the far post to nod home Don Given' looping header and Blues were in front. And with the crowd still celebrating, Givens set up Buckley again who sent an inch perfect chip over Roach and just under the bar to make it 3-1. The second half was just six minutes old when victory was assured. The brilliant Irishman Don Givens got the goal he deserved, rounding off a sparkling move involving Towers, Dennis and Calderwood by heading powerfully past Roach. From then on United seemed just happy to keep the score down and they looked like doing that until the last minute when Givens, who had a hand in every goal, nodded the ball into the path of Jimmy Calderwood who smashed the ball low into the net to complete a five star afternoon for Blues. Line Up: Freeman, Tarantini, Dennis, Towers, Gallagher, Page, Dillon, Buckley, Givens, Calderwood, Fox ----------------------------------------------------- and from Man United 1 Blues 1...... October 17th 1981 (att 48,415) Blues Wealands,Van Den Hauwe,Dennis,Dillon,Broadhurst,Todd,Brocken,Whatmore,Worthington,Gemmill,Van Mierlo..... Sub Handysides United Bailey,Gidman,Albiston,Moran,Wilkins,Buchan,Robson,Birtles,Stapleton,Moses,Coppell ....Sub Duxbury Soccer's big spenders Man United paraded record signing Bryan Robson for his home debut and The Reds threatened to overrun Blues as Robson and Wilkins dominated the middle and wasted one or two chances Blues suffered an early blow when Mark Dennis went off with an injured ankle and Handysides came on and Blues had to reshuffle with Gemmill moving to left back In the 33rd minute Van Mierlo's pace took him past Gidman leaving the fiull back no option but to trip the flying Dutchman Frank Worthington drilled home the spot kick This inspired the Blues who could have gone further ahead in the 38th minute with a fine shot from Brocken that was tipped over the bar by Bailey and 3 minutes later Bailey again denied Brocken much to the relief of the home fans who saw their side pinned back in their own half right before and after the interval In fact Whatmore could have put Blues 2-0 up right after the 2nd half whistle but Bailey rushed out to save at the striker's feet Unied came back and Wealands made a superb reflex save from Birtles before United equalised in the 64th minute when Coppell turned in a Stapleton cross after a 40 yard run by the Irishman This was a committed agressive performance by Birmingham that should have seen them win their first away game of the season but it wasn't to be thanks mainly to United keeper Bailey ... :applause: |
