Birmingham's tactics to beat Villa Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce must decide what formation to play against long-ball specialists Villa at St Andrews on Sunday. With Villa boss Martin O'Neill preferring to play what could more politely be described as a "direct style" of football, Bruce must decide whether to opt for 4-4-2, 4-4-1-1 or a mixture of 4-5-1 and 4-3-3. However, while the decision would be a crucial one in any other match - and arguably far easier to make - Bruce has suggested the rulebook goes out the window when it comes to the second city derby. Bruce was quoted by the Birmingham Mail as saying: "Does it really make any difference in a derby game? We played Wigan and played really well and scored three goals, we played well at Man City with one off the front, Man United too. "The team has been playing well. However, we haven't been getting the points we deserve. I am looking at it - deeply I am looking at it, absolutely - and I have always tended to play 4-4-2 in my managerial career. "If I was going to pick a formation I enjoy playing, then it would be 4-4-2. However, I am also wary of what we are trying to be here. Sometimes to take people on with a 4-4-2, for instance Man United, well I'm sorry but they are better than what we are. Same as Chelsea. We wouldn't do ourselves any favour." While the Blues are clearly not (yet) on the same level as Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson's side humiliated Villa by keeping the ball on the floor and making quick, short passes to negate the physical tactics Villa sometimes employ. Close control in the middle of the park, with pace out-wide when on the attack, could prove to be Bruce's best option and, as was seen against Man Utd, could be used to exploit Villa if their heads drop. Fortunately, Birmingham have the players who can cope with the fiery atmosphere that is guaranteed to engulf St Andrews on Sunday. Whether Villa players have the same mentality - even those who have played in Old Firm derbies - remains to be seen. Perhaps the best way to beat the historians will be by ensuring all 11 players in blue are still on the pitch at the end of the 90 minutes! (Vital Football) Let's beat Villa ... **thumbup |

4-5-1 if Forssell doesn't start. If he does start, he has to have a partner up front as he wont put himself about like Cameron does. 4-5-1 --------------Taylor Kelly----Djourou----Ridgewell ©-----Schmitz -----------Nafti-------Muamba De Ridder-----------------------------Larsson -----------------Kapo ----------------------------Jerome Larsson in on the wing as with Agbonlahor/Young on the wings, we all know he will track back and help out our fullbacks throughout the game and then get forward aswell, personally I feel he's one of our more passionate players so a start against the Vile would be a good thing for him and our team IMO. Palacios will be on the bench, I know he says hes ready for the derby and wants to play, but I feel with everything in his life as it is at the minute, a big derby would be the wrong game for him to be thrown back into....Id have him on the bench personally. Kapo has to show a willingness to work and help the midfield out, aswell as get forward into the box, (take note from Larsson). Also, I would like him to let a few long range shots go now and again, we know he can after that strike at Stamford Bridge, but usually now always seems like he just wants to walk them in. (well except for the winner against Wigan) Jerome will stretch the Vile back line, giving Laursen and especially Knight problems if the ball is played on the deck to him. Hitting long balls up to him against Knight will give him no chance, and we need to play it through the wide men and Kapo to stretch them. De Ridder's class can get the better of Bouma/Mellberg (if De Ridder switches) and Larsson has proven he can beat a man and whip in a great cross too, but if we do manage to get these good crosses in, its up to the other players to ensure their in the penalty area and get on the end of them |

Le Tiss predicts "I don't think Villa are in the greatest of form at the moment either. They are sat in mid-table, which is where I would expect them to be and I don't think they are any better than that. Dog's abuse There will also be a lot of attention on Liam Ridgewell in this game after he moved from Villa to Birmingham in the summer. There's not a lot of players that have made that move and it's tough when you've played for both sides and the local derby comes around. He knows he's going to get dog's abuse from the Villa fans so he's got to be mentally strong. He'll do his best to try and play it all down, but it's a massive game for him, just as it's a massive game for the whole city. HOME WIN - I've got a funny feeling that Birmingham are going to sneak it in this game. Villa might be ahead of them in the table, but home advantage is important in a derby and Birmingham will just have enough for them at St Andrews - though I wouldn't fancy them at Villa Park. It's certainly going to be tight and these games don't tend to be high-scoring affairs. I'm going to go for a 1-0 win for the Blues. " |

Saturday 10.15 , the last time I will be here before the game. No nerves yet but there's time. Come on Blues, be up for it more than them, lots of passion and show some of that neat football that's starting to come through. Just one more thing, score more than them. |

I think Phil Thompson just summed it up perfectly. What makes us different to the Merseyside derby or the Manchester Derby is that: A/ neither team has another big rival, Liverpool have Utd, visa versa, Boro are disliked by both Sunderland and the Toon. We just have each other. B/ in games such as the merseyside it's more of a footballing match, you have good goals and it's quite slick. Ours is more like a battle, it'll never be a pretty game. Which is why our game is unique. The general consensus on SS was that if Viler turn it into a footballing match they'll win, and that Ridgewell has to be on form. I generally agree. |

a) what about West Brom? Even Wolves? B) They take any opportunity to put us down. We just stand for it. We even say we agree. I totally disagree. |

There seems to be a general consensus with those unfamiliar with the current Blues apparoach that we are battlers as opposed to footballers.... Apparently the Vile are the footballing side??? Consequently the potential of a downpour tomorrow is supposed to be in our favour.... There is no question in my mind that the current Blues Team are a footballing side.... From what I have seen of Vile and know of MON then their approach seems to be Route One.... Let them all think as they do.... I like the idea of Blues being the surprise package.... Just wished that CJ was up front! |
