This is probably a criticism of a lot of keepers and not just Taylor who I think had a decent game against Newcastle. It occured to me watching the match that most of Taylor's long ball kicks just came straight back at us as the Newcastle defence (not exactly the greatest) just returned the ball to thier midfield to launch a counter offensive. This happened I would say 90% of the time. Surely it is not beyond the realm of the goalkeeping coaches to get the keepers to roll the ball out to defenders to build an attack with, I would suugest, a much better success rate than 10%. I understand that you need defenders with the ability to launch such attacks but that is down to coaching. Just an observation. |

I think you can add to that players who send high passes from defence to attack. Such a pass, more often than not, is probably 60-40 in favour of the defender. The top teams use more passes along the ground or, if they do send a high pass, it is over the heads of the defenders so that the forwards can run onto it, or is a carefully hit pass into the penalty area for the forwards to head. Keep it low is the answer most of the time. |

This has been one those issues that has annoyed me the most for a while along with why players don't spread out on place kicks from the keeper. We don't seem to be able to pick up the second ball and a constant in our performances for quite a while is that we give possession up far to easily. |

Taylor needs an option to be able to bowl it out to a defender. Too often he doesn't have it. It's no good him throwing the ball out to a full back if they're going to be tightly marked the moment they get it, and the way we operate at corners (bringing everybody back) means Taylor by and large has no out ball should he catch the cross. Murphy to his credit does seem to show for the ball quite often, but if it's only one player making themself available then it's very easy for the opposition to nullify. |
