We have a mistake-ridden defence. To wins games we need to aim to score three goals. Therefore we should play a much more attacking lineup to keep the other team busy. Therefore:

1
Three central defenders (Kelly, Taylor, (Ridgewell or Jaidi))

2
Muamba as playbreaker, sitting in front of the back three, with freedom to break forward

3
Have wing backs pushing on (Larsson and Murphy)

4
Kapo as playmaker

5
McFaddern, Forssell and Zarate as the strikers (McSheff and O'Connor as cover)

Goals aren't scored in the middle. It's what you do at either end

Sounds like you're advocating the hoof up the pitch there. And playing a strikeforce without a single target man, rendering the hoof up the pitch completely obsolete. And we can't attack down the wings because Larsson and Murphy will have nobody behind them to cover when they go forwards.

So we're pretty much just rolling out the red carpet to the other side to hammer us.

But if you dont win your battle in the middle then there's no need in even thinking about the other end - you'll never get the ball there.

I think the original poster may have a point.

It's apparent (and has been for some time now) that our defence is just not up to scratch. Two of the goals we conceded at Pompey could and should have been avoided, and Owen's against us, although he was very alert, was another poor one to concede with defenders just standing around watching. We can dissect every goal we concede and say this could have been avoided, or that shouldn't have gone in, but the simple fact of the matter is there is very little organisation at the back. Our goalie simply does not have enough of a presence in the box, he's too timid. Whilst I like Taylor and think he's been a good servant to us over the years, he does not have the strength of character to marshall a premier defence - there is a lack of confidence at the back, and he's not someone who can instill confidence into our defenders, however mediocre they actually are.

I would suggest a back 4, with two holding midfielders, two wingers, one target man and one playing just behind the striker 'in the hole'. McFadden will be a big loss for us, but I think there's room for Zarate and/or De Ridder in that formation.

For the record, I don't think we should be persevering with McSheffrey. Whilst I acknowledge that Zarate was very lucky to have 'scored' yesterday, he has to be the better option, surely. I would like to see a front 4 of Larsson, Kapo, Zarate, Forssell.
De Ridder, Jerome and O'Connor can fill the gaps re: injuries, substitutes or suspensions.

We've got a really tough run-in, but we are not one of the 3 worst teams in this league. Our defensive frailties being what they are, I say let's try and score more than them.

Thing is, we're letting in sloppy goals mainly from set pieces. I would suggest an extra defender, especially for set pieces.

The case is that we don't have a tall midfielder or center forward that can help out in defensive situations.

That formation is more or less what we playing now, Muamba and DJ/Nafti are defensive midfielders.

It is also the same defensive formation everyone was moaning about under Bruce. The difference under McLeish is he encourages people to get forward so at least we score, Under Bruce we tended to lose 1-0.

The problem is we have poor central defenders and limited options elsewhere. In my view we are far better to keep doing what we are and trying to win game. We are not defensively good enough to sit back and try for a 1-0, as per Bruce.

Jaidi and Taylor and the two tallest, should we play with both of them in order to defend set pieces?

No drastic changes are needed, we've been playing pretty well, we just need the Centre backs to stop playing like a pair of mongs, these lads are supposed to be top flight defenders, the only thing that bemuses me is the bloke who bought them was a flipping good CB himself.

Missing out on Cahill was a huge blow for us, and if we go down I think that will have been the final blow, it'll be so annoying if we do go down because I can see that we're very close to being a really good team, McLeish just hasn't had enough time to repair the holes left by Bruce, but as long as we're outside the relegation zone I'm happy, and last time I looked at the table.............. **thumbup

Isn't that a contradiction in terms? Sitting in-front of a back three and being allowed to break forward?

So we're conceding goals with four defenders on the pitch, so we should play with one less? And shove them all in a formation they've probably never played before in their lives? Right, ok.

Our defence isn't that bad!! Not as if we shipping 4 or 5 a game. We have a decent goal difference compared to teams around us, its just individual mistakes we need to cut out. If we do that we will be fine! If not ......... We all know where we will be.
